Ok so this is what I have done
Ordreded a
Netgear RND4000 ReadyNAS NV+ V2 4-Bay NAS Diskless (RND4000-200AJS)
from computer lounge for $419 with one drive
Drive
I will add drives as I sell my externals
I will also continue to build the NAS box as it really doent cost that much
once built i will see if it does what I want it to do without having to get a degree in computing if so I will then sell the Netgear box on trademe
My decision for the netgear was Price ,favourable reviews and the netgear dgnd3700 router modem i have that i am well pleased with.
will let you know how i go

I have two clients using the 2 bay version of the QNAP TS-412. Easy set up and have not had any issues since installing a year ago.

Slowly getting the readynas setup. All is working well but the instructions on the netgear site assume you are well qualified to install and operate. There are quite a few instructional vids on you tube. Things like How do you backup your workstation step by step guide for idiots didnt seem to exist so that took me awhile to figure out
Been trying to add a Plex server which various places say is possible but had a few issues
So dont think these things are plug and play they take a bit of effort. I plugged in a 2tb ext to the usb slot and it had no rprobs identifying it

You know that expression "a little knowledge can be dangerous" Thats how i feel with computers but hey its only a game to me so my lively hood doesn't rely on it.
Having said that I just purchased a Server, IBM X3200 M2 2x 2.6GHz 1GB on trademe that when it arrives I will set about seeing if I can use it for the DIY Nas project Stay Tuned

Ok so I have added 2 x 2tb drives to my Readynas system and all is going well I was in the process of transfering over files from my external drives which are 2 tb as well and i went to check the price of more 2 tb drives. Now at present some external drives in casing are cheaper than internal drives and I thought well maybe I could strip the drive out and then of course the other penny dropped I could strip the drive out of the housing I had already and i dont have to worry about selling them or getting new ones.

So the question Is the drive inside a external drive hard wired in or is it an easy job to stip one out??

So I think thats it! I am all set
I have my Netgear Ready Nas sys all go 4 x 2tb drives and one ext 2tb drive. I have pretty much moved all my data off the 3 x 1tb externals and 2 tb external Already sold the 2tb now to move the 1tbs
