I only need the system to work over a distance of about 10 - 12 metres, straight lin and 3 walls.

Yes, moved into another room, one wall away.

Will do that.  Yesterday I tested the laptop/card combination on another wifi (CafeNet) and I picked up the signal loud and clear whilst sitting inside my car parked alongside the public access hotspot, which tends to point (again) to the router itself.
