Plenty of other ISPs out there that do vdsl. Don't know why you stayed on the phone with Vf for so long. I would have gone somewhere else.

Fair comment about other ISP options being available.

I made the (?incorrect) assumption that ISP own website/address lookup funcions would be the most accurate as to whether VDSL was available.
ie vodafone, telecom, snap, orcon websites all said no service available so I didnt go any further.

Only when JohnR above suggested I speak to a person at vodafone that I was told it was available just now (after the 50 min wait - but thats what hands free mode on my desk phone is for)

Inertia might make me stay for another year before seriously looking into options for UFB which would be an option there. Plus vodafone cellphone plan will have expired my then too. Current primary driver to upgrade is improved upload speed to skype grandparents.

The Vodafone proxy issue with geo blocking is a potential line in the sand.

Having said that, as I havent signed up to anything yet, I might ring the others to see if their website address lookup features are wrong too and they can offer me a service.

Chorus one is better (!)

50 minutes waiting to answer the phone bit disapointing though.

If it isn't a huge risk of your privacy do you mind PM'ing me the street that you live on? I'm so curious that you are surrounded by Fibre but don't have it! I thought all of this area of Dunedin was UFB deployed! Crazy (sadly for you).

VSDL Modem arrived yesterday.... looking good.

Just been rung by installer to say Chorus rung him to say I cant get VSDL..... bugger.

But he thinks he can install a master splitter if I want .... (which is what started this thread.)

So Chorus map says yes, Telecom/Vodafone/Orcon/Snap maps say No.
Ignore our map says vodafone. Chorus Map more accurate our Map is rubbish. Start proceedings, send modem.
Vodafone... er.... Chorus now says not Chorus map wrong and VSDL not available...
Really guys...

Now what to do with that modem....

Chorus chap turns up to install master splitter......point out where the entry point into the roof is and how the phone lines can be accessed from under the house and where in my study I'd like the splitter to terminate in.

Then have to stop him from trying to install it downstream from the alarm system.... suggest maybe putting the splitter between the entry point in attic before the alarm... suggest he lifts the pink bats to follow the cable.

Much fiddling ensues - queue the hot water cylinder starts leaking - plumber called urgently. Chorus guy says finished - ok whatever - leaking water trumps internet wiring.

Thursday night ring Vodafone do ask how to return the vdsl modem ......

vodafone "what do you mean ? We have setup accounts and everything, you are good to get vdsl.

me "Well chorus says no"

Vodafone "The file says yes to vdsl.....oh hang on you've got two files. One says yes the other no. Will talk to manager....Not sure we will ring you tomorrow (friday)

Friday
No phone call but get email saying vodafone has made a booking for chorus tech to set up my VDSL ??

Sunday
Text message from vodafone. Your broadband is all set up and ready to go..

Thursday
1 hour spend banging my head against wall trying to get that vdsl modem to connect.
Ring vodafone - "Can you check your system because I cant establish vdsl connection." (less faith in their system than my ability to plug a modem in).
Vodafone - " you cant get vdsl according to chorus so its not setup... "?? what about conversation last week and the text on sunday
" We will send out a courier bag for the vdsl modem and cancel that second chorus appointment"

Really guy this has been extremely frustrating and leave a very bad impression of vodafone.

To be fair to Vodafone, this won't be entirely their fault. Still a poor experience.

I respectfully disagree.

All it took was one email from vodafone to say sorry chorus has got in touch and they cant provide the service. Could I get in touch with them to arrange for the modem to be picked up and of course they would recredit the $100 I had paid for the modem.

Instead I have had a number of phone conversations with vodafone, emails, txts which all said VDSL was all go and great frustration on my part trying to chase down why I wasnt getting something they said I could have nearly two months ago.

Just out of interest, did the master splitter install improve your ADSL2+ download speed?

Not noticably no.

Nothing really changed, maybe the house was re wired before we bought 2 years ago.

Though at the risk of being unfair, the installer fellow didnt seem to really be on the ball. Next time I'm in the roof I'll have a look at what was done master splinter vrs filter, but as there's no VDSL available I'm too disheartened to look.

Still my ASDL2 gets me 10 Mbs to Auckland and 4-5 Mbs to San Francisco for Netflix so it's pretty good.

Even when the speed doesn't go up that much, my impression has been that the overall internet experience is much "snappier" for all my relatives and friends that I have installed one for. It seems to produce a more stable connection with less packet loss and hence less need to resend data. Or maybe it is the power of positive thinking after you have gone to all the effort of installing something!

If you've had Master Splinter up in the roof then not suprised you have DSL problems. Better find a ninja turtle to fix it...

Time to find a new industry!

Get Splitter installed, I had VDSL connected last month , ISP did some test against my address and said, i would only get 18MB down 5-10Up.

So connection day came, all was connected, checked sync and i was @ 18MB down 6MB up, so I installed Master splitter and ching ching 45MB Down 10MB Up, and still running solid.
