I know these are more expensive but I'd go for the intel processors based boxes would expect more packages to be compiles for these CPU s than the ARM.

Great bit of kit, but at nearly 5x OP's stated budget, not sure it is an option here!

True, easy to let the requirements grow but I'm unlikely to stress the capabilities of the 213j

True.

Sometimes paying extra is worth it :-)
I suspect most if us could get away with smaller cheaper cars, less powerful pc's etc.
?buy it on hire purchase maybe..

I'm currently looking at the Asustor 606T and 608T models, which seem to review decently. I like the concept of having a bit of extra space to grow a media collection over time, which inevitably happens, and being able to use RAID6 for a bit more fault tolerance. But it kind of depends on space needs and budget I guess.

I recently got a 214j, and then was given a Seagate 220.
Really like the Synology, but found that my old Canon MP610 USB printer was unreliable plugged into it. Trying the Seagate, and it seems better. But would still rate the Synology as better. More features and Apps.

They make awesome kit's, I've sold about 15 units of various types to various different requirements, basic data storage, to SME's and Security setup's.

Reliable, Lot's of public knowledge/google search anything/fast

Thanks everyone for your help and ideas

I just ordered a Synology DS213j from amazon.com for 211USD (249NZ$) including delivery. Exactly $100 cheaper than buying from a local supplier so in my view worth the risk of DOA etc.

Initial intention is to install a single WD Red 3TB HDD - 3TB seems to be the sweet spot for GB/$ at the moment and these drives are well reviewed
