But as above, wiring is probably your primary issue.
Another option is the Draytek 2710e, can also be put in full bridge mode.

No difference with NZ vs AU firmware, it appears they were the same.

I don't know if this matters, but I noticed the 2Wire is running G.DMT2+ Annex A and the DV120 was running ADSL2+(G.992.5).

I've got under the house and inspected the cables. The jack in the wall is five months old, along with new CAT5e running 3m down to the twisted black copper pair. That is run direct to the dmark. However, that pair looks much older, thick black insulation with no numbers. The house is 30-35 years old.

There is only one other jack in the house and it has a filter on it. But I've tried without anything pugged into it.

Just grab a VDSL filter off trade me and install it...
Wire it up
then when you move it restore it back to how it was...

Can you force G.dmt (ADSL1) on the Draytek? It may be that it is preferring 2+, but given your particular line conditions that G.dmt would be better.

Yes, I have tried G.DMT but it syncs at 4-4.5Mbps then. It doesn't have a G.DMT2+ option.

What are you trying to achieve with the Draytek? Can you not use the AM300 if it syncs better?

This was all brought about by telecom issues with my connection. The connection speed tested (speedtest.net and others) at 36Kbps (yes Kbits) to 300Kbps to anywhere outside of NZ. Even though my sync rate was 8Mbps+ Yet I got 6Mbps to telecom CHCH servers from Dunedin. JPEG Images would stall about 20% through the download and youtube/etc wouldn't even play. I then tried a VPN and got 5Mbps to US servers and could stream 720p content.

I needed to do some traceroutes to find out why my routing was giving me fits, but my AM300 wouldn't allow it through for some reason. I had been running it for 5+ years now so thought it may need replacing.

I had a 2wire on hand and chucked it up for test. It synced even faster, 8.8Mbps but didn't solve the foreign TCP network issues. I could at least traceroute with it. But the 2wire has crap DMZ support that wouldn't work for my network needs.

The main reason for buying the Draytek was to use the PPPoA -> PPPoE and bridge the modem to my Linux firewall. But it won't often sync above 5Mbps even in normal NAT mode.

It's been over a week now and even telecom complex internet support can't give me answer of what is/was wrong. My TCP connections are slowly getting better again. But keep in mind that all this time I got 6Mbits/s to CHCH and 5Mbits to US servers but ONLY over VPN. Direct speed test to US were 36-300Kbps.

Summary

* Connection problems with TCP (no icmp packet loss) over the last 1 and 1/2 weeks
* Replaced modem (am300) with 2wire but can't use it long term due to DMZ problems
* Ordered a Draytek to replace 2wire but has trouble sync above 5Mbps
* Just want a basic modem without stupid crap like wireless/content filters/NAT/etc.

P.S. I hate dealing with telecom T1 and T2 support. Couldn't find any other ISP allow you to have static IP + 500GB without QoS in NZ. :(

It sounds like you've ruled out the modem as being a factor in the original problem.

You're likely to get a benefit (on any modem) from sorting the internal wiring, but it looks like that's out of your control ;-). On problematic lines, some chipsets are just going to be better, and it looks like the TI in your case.

What about leaving the Draytek in place for the short term for testing (presumably the underlying issue can be addressed before too long), then swap back to the AM300?. Still a good market for the Drayteks if you decide to onsell...

Worth starting another thread to look at the original issue?

I agree, the original problem was not the modem. For whatever reason the AM300 wouldn't allow traceroute through was an additional problem that kept me from troubleshooting. So I wanted to replace it with the DV120.

As for the telecom problems, it's almost impossible to deal with them. Speed tests are almost back to normal 7Mbps+ now. Of course, they will never admit or say what the problem was so not sure how that would help. I do have some traceroutes done with the 2wire at the time. Not sure what good it would do to post though.

Just want a good speed and basic modem only. I've seen a TP-Link 8840 that is basic, but spec wise it didn't seem on par with the DV120. Randomly buying modems to check sync speed doesn't seem like a good option. :D

If you've got another box that's doing all the hard work, then all you need is something basic and reliable in bridge mode - I'd stick with the AM300 or even an RTA1320...

So I gave the AM300 another go and wouldn't you know, it all works again. The sync is rate 7.5Mbps, a bit lower than before. HOWEVER, traceroute and half bridging now works as it should. It may have very well been all telecom issues that were blocking my traceroute and TCP streams. Of course tech support blamed my modem so I bought the new one. It was very weird that traceroute started working once I replaced the modem with their 2wire.

Don't think I can mark this resolved as I never got the draytek working at better speed. Best I got today from it was 5.3Mbps. The linksys 7.5Mbps and 2wire got 8.8Mbps.

Telecom wanted to change me $140 to send out a tech to fix their networking issues... yet do I get to charge them for the purchase of a new modem I didn't need and hours wasted on the phone to their support?

This will almost certainly be a tech checking the physical line, and the charge will apply if any fault is found to be your side of the demarc. Statistically speaking, it's more likely a fault will be on the dwelling side, but not always (should a physical line fault exist).

Given you are in a >10Mb/s area, you should be able to get a better sync rate than you do - the issue is far more likely to be internal wiring, unless you are in one of the couple of areas like Epsom or Whenuapai where people regularly report low sync rate issues despite sorting internal wiring. Whether you can address this may depend on the landlord though!

Honestly putting a master filter does not really change the house remarkably, just mention that the wiring inside the house is poor and needed that to be done. Just pay it yourself if the speed is hugely important. That is what I'll do in an instance.

You can go on and on about trying loads of different modems/firmwares. As suggested, the main culprit is usually the house wiring.

Until the house-side wiring is checked, all other efforts are worthless and wasting your time in my opinion.
