wasabi2k: powerline networking + a unifi AP will make life a million times better if wifi is your issue.

buying a new router solely for wifi is kind of throwing the baby out with the bathwater - sort of...

This, replacing the router won't likely be the silver bullet, but buying an AP and attaching it to your existing network will give significantly better results. As mentioned the UniFi are a good device and support POE which gives you good options on placement. They UniFi management software also makes expansion easy to manage.

5ghz is a good solution in a crowded neighborhood, Note which devices would be able to benefit. Range on N isn't quite as good so adding it as a secondary AP is a better idea.

Of course if you're finding the current device quite rubbish, it's a good opportunity to upgrade as well.

mishyman: I use my flatmate laptop in my room and it was getting slower speeds but we are thinking to buy a new router so i can use the 5ghz even my ps3 getting good speeds

Ps3 is only 2.4, and any wireless solution can't match wired when it comes to maintaining optimal ping.

@sbiddle I respectfully disagree, as hardware can make a significant difference.

For instance his N300 is 2.4GHZ only, as most modern devices can pick up 5GHZ, I suspect (as I certainly found myself) that a device with 5GHZ in the same location as a 2.4GHZ device can deliver significantly higher speed.
In my case it was an a$$ Huawei dual band VDSL device which Vodafone supplied, despite fiddling with multiple channels I was only able to get a max bandwidth of around 5-8Mbps, however in the same location using the same device (my S4) I was able to get 13-18mbps on the 5GHZ spectrum depending on the time of day. I don't even pretend to know the science behind it, but changing to 5GHZ could fix this guys speed problem. :)

Hardware can make a difference, but the belief that a single AP can adequately cover an entire house is the way people thought about WiFi 10 years ago. It doesn't apply to this modern world where physical limitations such as noise floor can't magically be changed and people's requirements for speed are greater than ever.

In a nutshell if you have a large house and live in a typical urban environment one AP isn't going to cut it these days if WiFi performance is important. The 2.4Ghz band is munted, and the coverage footprint of 5Ghz is significantly less than 2.4Ghz offers.

To be completely honest I can't wait for 802.11ad to hit the market - 60Ghz WiFi that will only work in the same room as the AP will be the best thing to ever happen to WiFi.

Yea i know that the ps3 only got 2.4 ghz but i'm saying here that every thing that i got like my pc ( that my wifi has 2.4ghz and 5ghz) ps3 are getting better speeds and plus i can pick up 8 wifi networks around me
