Slightly OT but I've got one of the new Netcomm NF8AC routers arriving tomorrow. This is similar to the NF4V offering ADSL2+, VDSL2 and Ethernet but has dual band WiFi with AC but lacks the voice ports. A model with the voice ports is due out soon.

Wholesale price is similar to the NF4V.

deadlyllama: TP-Link do a dual band router for $95 on pricespy (TL-WDR3600). It can run OpenWRT and friends, too.

Do both bands work with openwrt? I have a cheapie tenda branded one, and it had no openwrt but I did find a tomato for it, but only 2.4Ghz works, 5GHz is a seperate radio inside it.

what sort of processors are in those? Some of the cheaper routers can't handle 100Mbps WAN throughput.

If it's similar to the NF4V, it should be capable of Gigabit speed NAT/Routing as the Broadcom CPU has a dedicated hardware router (so called "packet accelerator").

I'd have no issues recommending it, but haven't had a good chance to play with it. For all intent purposes it's an identical product to the NF4V except for lacking the VoIP ports and featuring AC wireless instead. The GUI and setup are identical. As for easy setup, I think the setup is pretty straight forward, but then when you look at people on here who have spent days trying to get one to work with Bigpipe it's possible some may find it confusing.

One of the benefits in buying one from an ISP that supports TR069 provisioning of the device is that there is nothing at all to touch.

I haven't had a good chance to test the AC wireless yet, all I can tell you is I hit 92Mbps on it but that was all I could do because it was plugged into a 100Mbps uplink at the time!

Do you want something that just 5Ghz or dual band?

For wireless i'd recommend Ruckus, see if you can pickup a dual band 7962 off trade me, Its not a current model but its still a very good access point and you can still get updated firmware for them. Plus you can run 6+ SSID's on each band.

If that's no good, I'll probably go for an airport express, or a mikrotik

I was looking for 5Ghz only but it seems in the cheaper price ranges, all are dual band. Which is fine, it can always be switched off. Or left on and screw the neighbours.

No, this version has AU/NZ plug. Not sure about openwrt support, but once I get it I'll know more. Don't really care about it tbh as it's just going to be an AP.

5Ghz is better at handling interference as there are more channels to choose from however as perviously said it doesn't travel as far as 2.4Ghz although 2.4Ghz is affect by microwaves, cordless phones and other household equipment that use 2.4Ghz, each have their pros and cons.

I run my laptops on 5Ghz as it offers better throughout and my mobiles on 2.4Ghz to get better range i.e. still have good signal if I'm outside having a beer.

The major problem where I am is our neighbours are very close, so 2.4Ghz interference is massive. Also where my router is situated is near one end of the house. So a 2nd AP situated near the middle of the house with 5Ghz or maybe dual band on a different channel should do the job (it's a small house)
