Ardgowan: I'll post back in a few weeks once I've been using mine 24/7. Given that my requirements are as trivial as they come, I'm hoping for a good stable outcome.

You will need the latest beta firmware to overcome the hourly disconnects which is by far the biggest issue affecting most people. One would expect they will make this publically available soon due to the scale of the issue.

Ardgowan: Also, Ubiquiti have made a link planning web app (http://airlink.ubnt.com) which can be fun to play around with. Don't forget it knows nothing about trees though.

And it frequently puts the towers underground rather than the height AGL that you specify. Hopeless.

Here's one I know is nothing like actual. The right link is 100m above sea level at the peak of a hill with LoS from ground level toward the other station.

That's hopeless :( I did experience some unreliability myself but was able to get around it by fiddling with the numbers slightly.

Does anyone know of a similar but better tool for this kind of link planning?

The main tool I use is a ladder.

Seriously, you can use as many of these link planners as you like but they aren't going to tell you squat until you have actually gone and looked at each end of the link. You will know pretty quickly where the problems are going to be.
The only thing I use is google earth to get a compass bearing for links where I can't see the other end (as in can't see the exact radio position, normally the 20km+ links) with my worthless human eyes.
