I had mine set up for external access, but canned this after the recent security issues. Given that for smaller files, Onedrive, Drive or Dropbox works fine for external access. And music can be easily uploaded to google or apple - it was a pretty simple decision: (1) Marginal occasional benefit of accessing some NAS files externally VERSUS (2) Significant disruption trying to deal with hijacked NAS!
Synology have a VPN application in the DiskStation software. I would suggest having a look at that and setting that up for remote access.
That way you only have a couple of ports to forward (depending on VPN type) to the NAS, none of which will give public access to the DiskStation web interface.
