ADKM: Yes, I don't get the concern either. Been working fine for years. Passwords would drive me mad! (Almost as mad as getting Win7 seeing the laptop!)

So you've never mapped a network drive with specific credentials??

I have a machine using remote desktop and that uses 'credentials' of some kind... and fortunately remembers them (as I don't).
It's in the book though.
I quite often "map" a shared folder to a local drive letter (mainly as some program wants to see a drive), but no passwords.

ADKM: There's a password on the wifi. "Everyone" is just me and my wife. Who else would know - or care ?

I take it you've never looked at a firewall log for anything with a public IP address. Most things that are connected to the internet get 'prodded' a few times an hour by things looking for vulnerabilities mostly by automated scripts, that just trawl through the internet testing everything, seeing what they can find to exploit.

You may have been protected to an extent by your router's simple firewall in the past (and probably a bit lucky), but if you have a laptop you'll presumably move it around, and very likely connect it to other networks (eg friends/work/coffee shop wifi) at that point you'll be completely open to anyone on that network, or possibly the entire internet.

Its much better to be protected ahead of time, than suffer the results of someone, or some automated process being a dick.

The nightmare scenario is here!

Found I could uninstall Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player (or remove feature, as they called it).
That went OK but suddenly I'm seeing some new screen and Microsoft is in a frenzy, wanting verifications and confirmations
and who know what. Emails are sent to both my accounts with some secret code... then I have to sign into a "Microsoft Account".
But it's the wrong password, but we can send you a new one..but first we have to confirm your email.. multiple confirmations by email again... new password works and in I get, and told to change my password AGAIN. So I change it to what is was, but NO! You can't have that.. so I add 2 more letters to it (basterds!) and that's all OK. Almost .. "Call us Overprotective... " says Microsofts next message.

I restart the comp, and my password doesn't work. It now wants the new one (with the extra 2 letters).
So my "secure" password for the laptop is now known by Microsoft, and been sent over the net about 50 times.
The only place it should be is in the laptops internal memory.

sounds like you are using a microsoft live account to login to the computer, so the above is how it should be

you can change it back to a local login if you dont like it

Extremely unhelpful reply.

The 'microsoft live a/c" was the default(?) setup path with no hint there was any other way.

I'm finding now this forced change of password has killed the XP-Latop access (can still go the other way) and it makes
sense as XP initially asked for a password, which has now changed. But the LAPTOP entry under 'My Network Places' was there
last night (but didn't work anymore), has gone now.

Wonder how it can be restored ?

and yes it is. I come across the same bugs every now & then, even on new Win8.1 PC's . Been seeing them since Vista came out.

mapping bugs , 2 of them . Never fixed by MS

google "change back to local account windows 8.1" thats how i learnt how to do it. Its amasing what you can learn from googling stuff

microsoft forces you to try and use a Live account for some things you can avoid it if you want to.
