Now we just have to wait for someone to buy one. And then complain that their conklin based Internet connection still doesn't just work.

Unfortunately you're right, default DNS uses Google.
That's disgraceful; should use the DHCP assigned DNS, if they detect a problem with it (like someone rerouting Google traffic) then perhaps at that stage they could suggest to the user the option to use Google DNS.

On the other hand, fantastic to have a self updating router that may help avoid old routers running vulnerable firmware becoming botnet slaves

I think it's already proven if the price is right people do or simply don't care.

The number of friends and family I have had to "fix" their wifi when the ISP has taken them thru changing the passphrase and the repeaters were left untouched is annoying. I think that is the point of difference that google can actually do something to help with. All the antennas and fancy code sharing stuff doesnt matter if people still have to deal with WPS to get a repeater working, and then have no idea how to re-configure it when the passphrase needs changing because one of the stupid kids gave it to one of his friends.

TPLink make a product called HyFi

Its really cool - the router has a built in Homeplug PLC.
When you want to extend wifi, you just use a remote unit.

The remote units are homeplugs with built in wifi access points.

The remote slave units automagically get the SSID and Passkey settings from the master router, so whenever you make a settings change, it automatically updates the associated slave units around the house via the powerline networking.

No slow doggy repeater/extenders.

The problem with them is that they only have chinese firmware.

The specs say it does PPPoE and works with cable and fibre, obviously in a USA context, but I wonder if it would work here with ISPs that don't require VLAN tagging?
