It means that your local SMTP service need to be configured to allow access without authentication. The default Exchange configuration is just right.

To prevent relay problems with spammers of course you wouldn't change the default Exchange configuration right? Even better you would make it only relay e-mails if coming from localhost - not even accepting authenticated connections from outside because a spammer could easily run a dictionary attack.

You still need to know the username and password for the accounts you have to download e-mail from.

Make sure you understand these concepts before installing any e-mail server because otherwise your Internet connection can easily be taken by spammers to relay their e-mails.

If in doubt, just pay for a hosted service.

so...

The way I want it to work is:

All email coming to any email account on our domai is forwarded to our server, But is held at google apps (or we could run horder or squirrel mail which is the buil-in stuff that comes with our hosting)

Then when the server is online it retrieves all of the emails and then dishes them out to all of the email accounts that I create on the exchange server.

Is this what should be happening or something completly differant?

I think I will install it onto one of our servers as a test, and operate off a test subdomain, and see what i can do. then I can completly stuff it up and start again with no major problems,

Is there anything that needs to be taking into particular consideration with this type of system?

Why do you want an Exchange Server? It will be just another thing to administer.

Google Apps for Domains provides an e-mail service for your domain, and you can access with a POP3 or IMAP client - or even webmail. There's no need for an Exchange Server in this configuration, at all.

Its for syncronization with mobile devices as we have a few in our family.

and we need to have emails which travel with the user around the domain computers, so that people can log into differant computers and have there emails with them, and from what I have read, with mobile devices, this is the only way that it will work.

But most mobile devices have IMAP and POP3 clients built-in, so you could still just use Googe Apps for Domain anyway.

The way you describe it seems the Exchange Server wouldn't be on-line 24/7, so synchronisation with mobile devices would be impacted.

The servers would be on most of the time, on at 7am and then turned off at 11 or so when the last person goes to bed. so its just that 8 hour gap when no one would be using them anyway. and they will be on overnight probably around once or twice a week.

The Exchange Server administration is not easy - domain, machine, message store all need some expertise. I still think you could have everything for free on Google Apps for Domains, or Domains Live, or use a service such as www.anywhereexchange.co.nz...

But it's up to you of course.

I run an Exchange Server, and it is up 24/7, with daily backups using a few hundred gigabytes, intense traffic and more. Not for the faint hearted.
