Im not sure what an ONT port is or a RGW i dont claim to know everything. What i do know is that i have a ONT where the fiber is converted to copper, which has 4 rj45 ports for your internal network and only port 1 works and it also has 2 pots ports for your phone connection. If you check out the link below from the vodafone website which shows a typical installation and they show an installed Chorus ONT for Vodafone UFB on page 10. Then again i could be wrong im not with vodafone im just going on the installation guide from vodafone

Jase2985: Spark use the optical network terminal (ONT) which chorus install to connect you to UFB. you connect your phone to this to get a phone line when on spark and my republic (maybe a few others)

Vodafone use a Residential gateway (RGW) to provide the voice, the rgw is your router. you connect your phone to this to get service.

read page 12 of the link you provided.

what works for one isp doesnt work for ALL isp's

Not sure why your choice of ISP makes you lucky for that, but ok then.

Providing it via the ONT has a higher cost compared to using the gateway, so you could look at it that you are unlucky since it ends up costing you more in one way or another.

on another note im currently looking into getting my ph back to "the old copper line" that was used before I switched from adsl to vdsl, I will try LAN to WAN for an experiment but im not a huge fan of having the budget huawei router just for my phone. very nearly cant be bothered with even keeping my phone line. I cant remembered the last time I used it lol.

Are you saying cost as in money? my ONT was free, the router that spark sent was also free. The reason i say im lucky is because i don't have to plug my phone into the spark provided router i can plug it directly in to the ONT

Hi you can go back to copper you might have to complain a little to get it done. I cant remember who said that your ISP cant refuse you wanting a copper landline. I got rid of the copper landing at home cause spark was going to charge me an extra 20-30 on top of everything else to keep my landline on copper.

Ok so we have clearly established that plugging into the ONT will not work because they are on vodafone. Also the 4 ports on the ONT are NOT a network switch and you need to pay for each one to be activated.

So why have you replaced the HG659? In my opinion its a really good router for an ISP provided one having 802.11ac wireless and all ny parents just got UFB with this modem and its fantastic in my opinion for a residential connection. I think the asus might have a slightly better processor and wifi range on it, and cloud management tool but other than that pretty much the same type of device curned out of some factory in east asia. You wont ever run the HG659 at 100% cpu either because you would need a ridiculous amount of firewall rules.

So my first piece of advice would be to just use the HG659 and re-purpose the asus in another location as a wifi access point (or sell it). But if you don't want to take that advise and use the ASUS as the main router then:

Go and get yourself a VoIP box like a linksys pap2t or a SPA3102 and plug that in to the LAN and plug the phone into that. The asus SHOULD have upnp so you shouldn't need to forward any ports.

Dont do the double NAT thing, it wont work, or if it does you will have problems with the network at some stage. UDP traffic is easily blocked when you start doing stuff like this.

The other reason why I would use the huawei is that if you have issues vodafone will help you. If you are using a 3rd party modem they will tell you to plug in the vodafone one and if that works sweet then it wont be their problem.

Its costing spark. Therefore they are either charging you more, or have less budget to put to things that matter for an internet connection.

i still dont understand how you are lucky, you still have to plug you phone into something, be it the RGW or the ONT, in some cases the ONT is in a poor position for a phone anyways so the RGW works better. + you can move the RGW around, you cant with the ONT.

Just to answer a question above.

Theres quite a story to why I dont like the huawei modems. I have always had problems with them and vodafone were never ever helpful or able to sort the issues I had with them, namely the fact they would have a data freeze of sorts as soon as I put some data load on the router, my connection would be 56k then speed back up and so on. Even did a remote desktop with the vodafone top techs and they had no clue, I tried logging my pathping and trace route info, and you could see the problem through that data. funny enough vodafone literally stopped replying to my emails after having average internet for 3 months. I was feed up to say the least so I tried a draytek modem and it gave me faster line speeds and no issues ever, not once. This was on vdsl. The same happened when I upgraded to fibre so I went straight to my new asus router and cured the problem much to vodafone disgust. Without changing anything I did a speedtest with the huawei, 18 up, 70 down, 12ms ping. I tried a few times over a day and found it always the same or thereabouts. Sometimes it wouldn't work at all with the data issue it had. With just plugging the asus in and no changes. 25up, 91 down, 3ms ping on average

On another note if you are considering upgrading to fibre and its going to cost you to change over, ie no free install. Then unless you are a heavy downloader or gamer I wouldnt bother, I do both alot so it was worth it, but I found VDSL really good once I changed my modem and even that was 60down, 10up. It would be ample for most average users. ADSL can suck it

Also the asus has wayyy better wifi, faster processor, generally looks like a better unit and you can turn the leds off. Vodafone and help/customer service do not go together lol. Just look at there own forums.

I'd imagine turning off vlan10 on the WAN port of the old router and connecting it to your LAN would get you up n going, so long as vodafone don't have any other restrictions on what can connect.

Alternatively vlan10 tag a switch on your lan and connect the vodafone router to that in its default config
