I remember back in the day (2003) I got a wifi router and could get a decent signal like 4 rooms away from it on a different story. But now days no hope. Not that I would do that now days.

I'm rural and have only one wifi in range, so get away with a 5DB aerial and get 150m+ coverage of my 2.7Acre property :)

Benefits of rural living!

(True? I'm lucky to soon get VDSL at an estimated 17mb even though backbone fibre goes right past along my verge, but theme the breaks, right? :D

If I am on my lawn with the phone trying to spotify while mowing, it doesnt work. I can see the AP on the kitchen cieling but no, 1-2 meg on speedtests, massive loss and erratic latency. Walk inside on the same AP, with less signal, and it will get full line speed and work fine. Stupid noisy outside.

Sounds like you need a new high power AP. smile

There is no problem with the signal levels, its at -50ish out there, but I guess I could get a 4w booster to get it up to the -40ish range. Can't hurt, right?

Whats the alternative, there isnt one really. Most home users dont want to run cables.
They want 2.4 to go through 3 stories and through 6 walls with no signal loss .
They expect it to just work, perfectly , without issues ("because my friends have no issues with their wifi")

It is what it is .  It will only get worse .
Some dont want to share and would rather flood the 2.4 band with their signal. frown

Sorry to hijack this thread, but does cellphone wifi work with both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands?

Some do. My old Note 3 runs on 5GHz fine!

yeah depends on the smartphone, the cheaper ones are typically 2.4 only

Depends. Usually the marketing lingo reads "dual band wifi" = 2.4 + 5

Remember 802.11ad is now official with the first kit on display at CES. Seeing 2Gbps on a speed test was pretty impressive!

60GHz means every room in the house will need an AP, I can just see the problems when people start complaining their WiFi is bad because they're not willing to do this.

Snap! I look at the congestion here on the 2.4Ghz channels, and realise "Oh! It's all my stuff!" ;-)  And I'm luckier still in that I get almost 60Mbps VDSL as well, yay for rural!

I understand AD is more intended for computer to device networking, effectively a bluetooth replacement. AC is the LAN oriented version.

Time to find a new industry!

I guess if everyone turned down the TX power from default 100%, that would help. Less range but no collisions.
