I've got one of these things. WHen I first had UFB, youtube and any video will load instantaneously. Suddenly some time last week they fail to load immediately, taking a while to do so. Already restarted twice. Speedtest also thinks I'm in a different town. SPeedtest speed is fine. WWM is on.

Any ideas?

Streaming in HD uses about 9~12mbps downstream and maybe 1~ up. 4K uses about ~50mbps down.

I find it extremely hard to believe you are having problems on a 100mbps connection unless you are downloading constantly, but even then TCP will act fairly so you can get about 10mbit to stream movies.

At the end of the day you can upgrade to 200mbps or even more depending on where you are located.

Are you absolutely sure you are not using wifi on all these devices, because I can see where things are going to go wrong? For starters chromecast (first gen is wifi only anyway). Throw in a few tablets, and smartphones, even sitting idle. + an xbox/playstation or smart tv and maybe a couple of laptops all connected to wifi at the same time and you are absolutely bound to have problems. So many packets being re-transmitted due to noise etc. This is just the way wifi works in short its average. If you have cordless dect phones, and microwaves or xray machines you are going to have an absolute nightmare with wifi.

Cable every thing up that you can to take the pressure off the wifi. And the wifi range on hg659 is average at best. Even though the unit boasts stupid marketing numbers like 1600mbps its never gonna get it. And I have not even started on the amount of noise on the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz ranges from neighbours.

Anyway I hear the asus units are good, reasonable quality wifi (from the reviews). But to be honest I wouldn't waste my money on a better router. The hg659 will work fine. And you don't need QoS with the exception of VoIP and maybe some UDP type applications. But if you are on spark then your phone will plug directly into the ONT.

A mikrotik is also another option, but I wouldn't use it for wifi, mainly routing only and it is somewhat more complex to set up than the HG659 or the Asus units others have suggested.

pretty much all this content is cached by your ISP. Netflix/Akamai/Youtube + more. If you are watching something that isn't in the cache or trying to access content by going around it like unblockers or something then you might have a slowdown by consuming transit.

Failing that you can try another router to compare. Remember if you watch the same youtube vid again, chances are your ISP just cached it so it may serve out of cache, making it more difficult to compare.

Sorry, typo. We are on a so-called 200 connection, and two or three hardwired (Cat 6e) devices streaming will saturate it no problem.

Chromecast in WiFi, but again it used to work just fine on our ADSL connection and old router. I'm almost tempted to set up the old router as an AP and connect chromecast and my phone to that.
