Reporting back: seems to be working fine now I have the modem at a different IP to the router ;) and <doh>

 

Additionally: it seems time to replace the master splitter. It's been in for the last 10 years :D

 

Still getting momentary outs. But they are momentary, not minutes long, not requiring restarting modem.

Out from Warkworth.

 

I'm going to pick up a replacement master splitter today. Once that's in we'll see how steady things are. 

 

It's due for replacing anyway (twice the life he considers ok) so might as well.

Could even be an ADSL1 spec if really old; else ADSL2 spec probably.

 

A fresh cable run would be a good idea too.

Regarding ISP and VDSL: every conversation I've heard anyone have about getting a modem from shifting to an ISP has always said ISP supplied modems aren't worth the hassle ;) BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET ;)

 

At this stage we're still going to be on ADSL so being able to get a modem that can do either means I can make a better ISP decision rather than rushing. Which we all know doesn't give good results.

Well, Spark uses the Huawei 659b. Vodafone the 659. ADSL/VDSL/Fibre. AC, 2.4/5 Ghz, Gbit LAN and WAN, thats not a bad featureset. And you can half bridge the supporting router like my Apple Airport Extreme due to Apple's finicky systems.

I've ended up putting in a DrayTek Vigor 130 which seems to be working ok. 

 

Additionally I've picked up a replacement master filter because the old one is about 10 years old and has served us well. Just have to fit it. I guess that means I need one of those push-in connector gadget thingies ;)

The cable that runs from demark (ETP) to your dedicated xDSL jack-point. If this is not CAT5/6, or has joins; best to run a new one if possible.

Have new Master Filter in. Thank you so much to @coffeebaron and @cisconz for talking me through it, and @coffeebaron for the little bits and pieces needed and sorting a non-special-push-tool-thingy solution :) 

 

The system is working except we still have teensy outages. I suppose it might be something in my router setup :( Or on my line from the exchange :( :(
