gez, windows sharing has been working pretty perfect for me for errr 10 years plus.  just right click a folder click share, set the security to everyone and youre away laughing.  takes all of 2 minutes.  the security tab is probably what is messing you up.

essentially what i have done

I have 10 years with windows networking, as well as having a networking + certification from microsoft. It does have random bugs that I've found across extensive different computers. While many times it does work, sometimes it just won't, no matter what you try, or it breaks randomly whenever someone reconnects to the network.

Thanks for all the replies, FAP sounds really interesting, no hashing which is nice.

Overall the question is, what are you trying to do? P2P shares? simple searching?  Reliable discovery? Increase overall speed?

I mainly want to enable people in the flat to share media and content on their computer, so we can stop downloading the same stuff over and over, and so people have access to my extensive downloaded files. I have my computer on 24/7 so it makes an ideal host for people to stream from and we're on a gigabyte backbone.

in all honesty, ild  still pick pure SMB shares for that, given the faults with it even.

I look to distributed setups when we start talking expecting solid 1+Gbit performance when everyone is obtaining the same file - EG everyone grabbing a patch at once.

searching functions are handy though.

I cant even get my brother to keep to using my file-server for media, despite its over 20TB of content sitting there.. he prefers to download content that makes my eyes burn, and then re-encode it for playback on a certain device, using a encoding profile that takes sandpaper to that allready existing burn.....

long story short though, nomatter how easy you make it, how simple. if people feel straight up downloading it will be more better, they will do so.

Just wait till you get into the argument of certain groups, profiles etc, then you end up with someone like me.. touchy as hell with perfection.

SMB, SAMBA, CIFS, windows file sharing take your pick.

Just because it works on your system doesnt mean it isnt bug free.
When it wont work , nothing you mention will get it to work. Ive had a few small & large networks over the years that were a
**&%%$* to get PC to PC share working .
If it were that bug free I certainly wouldnt have had to resort to 'net use' in a startup batch file.
