Download Deluge and let me know how it goes. I have noticed that client is the best for these sort of situations. Seems to be the easiest to configure too.
What client are you using?

Does the HG659 have QOS ?, set surfing to highest priority and lower torrents
But get your self a router that can handle a heap of connections
The HG659b is an exceptionally powerful router.
It's not hard to cripple any router out there if you set the number of connections high enough.
+1 to that. I have never had issues with the 659 and it has performed better than most "High end" consumer routers with throughput. Go find me a router for the same price that can handle a gbp/s fibre connection.
Originally bittorrent, have now tried utorrent. Downloaded deluge but when i loaded it up it appeared to have a lot less functionality/info columns that the other 2 so didn't bother with it as i also figured trying 2 different clients should be enough to rule that variable out. I will give it a go though.
I guess i would reluctantly use a client with less functionality if it fixed the problem, it just irks me that the better modem has problems where an older one doesn't.
