Just checked Ethernet status on PC and it says 1.0gbps, so assume thats the speed to the modem?
Your PC can communicate with the modem/router at 1 gigabit per second through the cable :)

Awesome :) #futureproof
Wait, what about when they bring out 10gbps?
depends on the cable and how good its been wired, cat6 will do 10gig over short distances
LAN splitters cut your speed down to 100Mbps so not recommended. Cheap switch will be great but cheap ones generally more of a necessary evil. Recommended solution is to run another cable and do it properly, cant always do this but its the recommended solution. Another common solution is where one of the network devices (usually an IP phone) has a 2nd port that you can plug the PC into, so essentially you daisy-chain the connection through the phone.
Time to find a new industry!
