Getting back on track, can anyone help me with my original question?  I have to work with what I'm getting and I'm going to need a Wi-fi adaptor of some sort and am wanting to know what type and/or brand is going to do the job without breaking the bank.

 

I've got a Netgear USB network adapter on my old desktop. Being a USB dongle means I can use a USB cable and affix the adapter to the wall so it's not buried down behind the PC which is sitting on the floor. I bought this several years ago from Dick Smith (before they shut down the stores) and it's always worked fine. The room the desktop is in is next to the room that has the router, so goes through one wall for a total distance of maybe 15 metres.
