I was under the impression that using two switches with an ERL wasn't a great idea (bridging the interfaces disabled hardware NAT?).

I guess another alternative would be using a non-POE switch with POE injectors. That could get kind of clunky though (I've already got three POE-powered APs). Anyone know of a simple multi port POE injector that doesn't end up being more expensive than an all-in-one option?

CAnnot speak for the netgear, but the D-Links are fanless except for POE models, any switch that is going to be potentially providing 100W of POE plus 20-30W for the switch itself will have a fan.

Of course if you only needed a few devices on PoE you could use your current switch as a dumb switch for the trusted network, then the 6 ports you would have left over (-1 for the ERL and -1 for the downlink to the other switch) would be able to be managed and assigned to any VLANs (i.e your APs). That would be the lowest cost option and relatively easy to manage as the second dumb switch doesn't need any management.

There are fanless PoE switches but a trade off between number of ports, manageability, speed or price. Some of the HP ones aren't fanless but variable speed fans which means they're almost silent under normal operation.

The Edgeswitch 16-150 is apparently the same hardware as the Unifi Switch 16 - and in my experience the Unifi 16 runs with the fans off when only powering a few devices; but it is more expensive than 2x 8 port fanless alternatives.

Presumably if I go down the ES-16-150W route for now, and decide to replace the HG659b when I get fibre, there would be little point in getting an Edgerouter?

Just to keep this up to date I have purchased;

I have started a new thread on which wifi AP to compliment these with.
