Gigabit is actually more resilient in the face of swapped pairs etc.

"Gigabit and faster Ethernet links over twisted pair cable use all four cable pairs for simultaneous transmission in both directions. For this reason, there are no dedicated transmit and receive pairs, and consequently, crossover cables are never required for 1000BASE-T communication. The physical medium attachment sublayer (PMA) provides identification of each pair and usually continues to work even over cables where the pairs are unusually swapped or crossed." [1]

I had a house built recently with lots of cat6 and rj45 ports (I think about 45) installed. The labelling was illogical and not in order, and 3 of the ports were wired incorrectly.

I second the suggestion of buying a cheap tester and verifying the patches are made and cables are in the right order.

Your lucky most of the wires looked punched down I have been to a new build in Christchurch this year where a "sparky" did the fit off and only punched down the blue pair. His reason was you only need the phones to work and internet is wireless...

Starting to think it's a router problem? now it's started to show up as unidentified network, troubleshooting that says "'ethernet' doesn't have a valid IP configuration" Did a whole range of command prompts flushed dns etc etc. Tried it on 2 different devices with no luck.

Try different cables. Wouldn't be the first time a dodgy cable has been the problem.

Bought some new cables yesterday and tested them out running straight to the modem-laptop. Guess I'll have a fiddle round with setting a static IP and whatever else I can change in the settings. It's showing my PC and connected in the router settings so something is getting lost in the middle
