its about your computers ability to process data, data goes through the CPU and ram (which I doubt it the issues but NM)

you are testing your Iphone over wifi, this is a different technology to Ethernet with different overheads etc. you cant really compare your testes to those you don't on the computer.

now try answering what speed is your Ethernet computer connected to your router at? what network card does it have in it? what model of laptop is it?

those questions will likely provide more answers than anything that has been said before in this thread.

My atom that is basically a crap tablet has 2 gigs and does mid 90s so ram has nothing to do with it.

It's terrible in edge or chrome on the web speed test but 95ish sometimes in the app.

Yeah Ethernet and Wifi are different technology, but I always thought Ethernet should be faster than Wifi most of the times? At least on the same device, internet speed should be much faster when you are using Ethernet than Wifi?

So my HP Laptop, when using Ethernet gets 65Mbps for download. It's network interface card (NIC) supports 100 Megabit.

Here's the laptop info:

CPU: AMD E1-2100 APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics 1.00 GHz
RAM 4.00GB
C drive: 445GB D drive: 18.5GB

Ethernet Network Adaptor: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Wifi Network Adaptor: Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11 bgn Wifi Adaptor

If I get a new laptop with better CPU, RAM and everything, will it be able to reach 100Mbps?

100Mb/s NIC, There's ya issue! FE=Fast Ethernet.

The thing is mate, for what you described doing, you don't need to worry about getting 100Mb/s. It will have no noticeable difference.
Go out there and spent $1500 on an I5 laptop with a SSD, your video content will still download in a fast manner and it will still play back video to your TV.
By the way, That E1-2100 APU is literally the same as a Celeron or high end atom CPU...Check all the benchmarks.. Google is full of people complaining about that CPU being average..

What is the issue with 100Mbps/NIC? My max speed is only 100Mbps so it should be ok right?

Well if I can reach 100Mbps speed I can download videos at a much faster speed, that would be a big difference. But I don't watch the videos on my laptop, so maybe SSD is not necessary?

This CPU is obviously very slow. If I get a laptop with Intel i5 CPU that would make a difference on download speed?

A 100 Mbps NIC will never perform at 100% as explained before. The way computers talk to each other require a receiving computer to send back a message to say the packets were received. This message in itself is an "overhead" and it will take a bit of the bandwidth available. Then your computer needs to process the packets - receive these and put in order so it can understand the content. If one packet is lost (interference, slow CPU) then the original packet needs to be transmitted again. This is "overhead".

Yes, 1 Gpbs ethernet is generally faster than WiFi. 100 Mbps ethernet is only faster than 802.11.a/b/g (802.11a max speed is up to 54 Mbps, 802.11b is up to 11 Mbps, and 802.11g is up to 54 Mbps) but then we newer 802.11 such a 802.11ac and 802.11n - these are a lot faster than 100 Mbps and most high end modern mobile devices (laptops, tablets and smartphones) will have this.

That's why your laptop 100 Mbps will be slower than your phone.
