I didn't think it was advisable to punch down stranded core.

NEVER, never try to punch down stranded core. The industry standard is to buy a length of cat 6 cable which is solid core and use that as it is designed to be terminated on the matching rj45 module. Stranded won't stay punched down and this will lead to faults.
The simplest way would be to drill oversized holes and use the factory patchlead as others have suggested.

I'm sure what I did isn't industry best practice but it gives a reliable gigabit connection over the 20 metre run I needed, so for a simple home network it did the trick. I wasn't keen to drill big enough holes to pass the RJ45 plugs through because of bugs etc but I guess it's easy enough to fill with epoxy or similar around the cable if you do it that way

Why not just buy solid core? Most wholesalers will have part boxes they will sell you.
