I really appreciate everyones input but I'm now more confused than ever! haha. I think I'll sleep on it for now but what I'm leaning towards is getting the new fritz7490 from 2 deg for 15 bucks, resigning for 12 months and getting 200 bucks credit and possibly returning the asus router unopened or selling on here.... anyone want a brand new ASUS RT-AC68U Gigabit WiFi Router Dual-Band Tri-Stream AC1900?

By the way, someone mentioned UFB, I'm in small(ish) town South Island so thats not going to happen too soon. We'll be VDSL for quite a while yet I think.

Hi, to be honest if you are serious about wireless and want to get good wireless around you house, then get a couple of decent WAPs that can be installed in prime locations, ideally you can add cables to give them backhaul. A couple of UBNT Unfi ac-lites or Grandstream 7600's appropriately placed in high locations to see over room clutter in a house can give you exceptional performance. Obviously another option is to get a 2nd Fritz and mesh it, but not as elegant a solution IMHO.
