I've just done a bit of a tally and on average we have the 2 kids connected with at least 3 devices at a time, myself on 2-3 at any given time, the Mac, the TV, the wife on 1-2 devices, Blu-Ray player, connected soundbar, random devices laying around permanently connected:

16-20 devices at a time usually.

My PiHole tells me I have 33 clients. Seems more than I expected (house of 2 adults and 2 kids). Maybe it counts IPv4 and IPv6 as separate devices. Certainly off the top of my head I only get to a bit over half that.

Around 20ish

Google home and Home Mini , Amazon Fire Stock, Chromecasts, Mobile Phones, Tablets, TV , Xbox, Logitech Hub, Phillips Hue Hub, Random single wemo switch, Kaza power switch, NAS, access points.

It adds up.
Mix of wired and wireless.

It depends on how I count them. I have devices connected to the LAN switch that are usually not on. Those include three desktops, only one of which is ever in use, and a mini-pc that is always off. There is an Android box and an AP that are always on. The only wi-fi device is a laptop I rarely use. This is in my main work room.

The router is upstairs. It feeds two LAN circuits and a laptop, as well as the VoIP phones. There is also another laptop on wi-fi.

In the lounge is another Android device, actually two, though one is never used. They are plugged into the LAN switch. The smart TV is not connected and is only used as a dumb monitor. There is a wi-fi fed by the LAN switch that is used only for a single laptop downstairs and any visiting devices that happen to be present.

So, three wireless laptops in regular use and everything else wired. Not as much as I thought.

Does my VMWare server count as one or n+1 devices, where n is the number of clients requiring Internet connectivity?

I think I probably have fewer than most, but I have a number of devices which communicate only within the LAN and therefore are irrelevant when it comes to router capacity. On the other hand, supporting only 32 devices on any sort of modern hardware is poor and I'm surprised people are hitting hardware (<cough> software) limit before a practical one.

My pihole says 10 devices active.

I anticipate this as currently all my IOT devices are offline. Maybe 6-7 smart home devices still to be configured.

About 38. Made up of 20 on WiFi, and 18 Wired (including Ethernet over powerline, and switches in a number of rooms).

However, they aren't usually all on at once. Thusfar, my Spark supplied Huawei router has been able to cope with the number of devices and the throughput, but I will likely need to put in a WiFi access point (or two) shortly, to deal with some of the areas of the house where the WiFi signal strength is very poor.

I can only see the number increasing, so at some point I will need a better main router.

I think it is somewhere around 50, family of five with two or more devices per person, if I plugged in everything I have sitting around for lab / testing I could probably fill the whole /24.

we have a static load of about 28 devices, although as mobile devices come and go this does increase quickly, not to mention things like TV's/DVD players etc.

As far as the ISP issued routers, never had a problem as we have always decided against the ISP hardware for this exact reason.

We have used in the past a NF4V this was great, but we upgraded to an edgerouter when we got fibre, this has been very good.

The golden rule I have adopted, if the device sit in one place and it has an Ethernet port, then give it a wired connection, this then frees up the Wifi to deal with the devices that only have a wifi connection

We typically have around 35 devices. Pretty even mix of ethernet and wifi. All the static video servers/client are hardwired, wifi is mostly mobile devices.

We run an Edgerouter lite as we have some slightly complex needs and for routing performance.

Interesting to do the maths. Just retired 3 wireless cameras as well, that would have bumped the amount slightly :)
