If you want to spend some money and aren't afraid to get into a bit of technical stuff, you could pick up a Mikrotik RB750 GR3 Hex, or a HAP AC2 if you need wifi on it, use that as your main router (I'm sure it'd fit in that little space, it's pretty damn small), and patch everything from that. You could even buy one of the Mikrotik passive PoE adapters to power it if you couldn't fit the plug into the space provided.

Hi, me personally I would choose an Mikrotik everytime, however an RB750Gr3 (aka HexS) will not do full Gigabit and will tap out around 400-500Mb/s if using pppoe, if you are not planning to go for a GigE WAN anytime soon then that would be my perferred option. An RB4011 will do GigE but is slightly bigger and closer to $300

Otherwise the Edgerouter is the way to go as long as you use hardware offload, as to which model, you would have to ask guys that commonly use them, but all the lower end ones (ER-X/ERX-SFP) have the same spec, the ER4 is twice that spec, and twice the $ to boot, but pretty sure the ER-X is all you will require for GigE WAN

Yeah given the pricing and GigE option - ER-X seems to be better option. ERX-SFP not because chrous will never allow us to plug-in fibre directly to our hardware.

I believe its the same price as ER-X with GigE. That's great. About configuration, if its easier to figure out shouldn't be an issue.

Again the question is which one?

Hi, you can on some business connections (BS3/3a) get an SFP ONT, ie the entire ONT is an SFP module supplied and managed by Chorus.

Perhaps a silly suggestion, but how about constructing a wooden frame the same size as the box and screwing it onto the front of the box using the existing screw holes, and then screwing the cover onto the new frame? That could give you the extra inch (or bigger) of space you'd need to slot the router inside, and you could paint the frame wood it to match the colour of the box cover and it probably wouldn't even be noticable.

Ease of use I suspect the EdgeRouter is easier but I wouldn't call either devices easy, the hAP AC2 does have an AP built in though.
A less than ideal but more practical long term option could be looking at refitting with a more appropriately sized in wall unit, or as was suggested above putting a larger face on the unit.
I would probably look at the refit if budget allows, although you'll need to get a professional to help with moving the ont safely, I wouldn't recommend an end user handle it at all.

Yup thats a good idea. Also can get rid of that 4 RJ45 sockets on the wall. That will free up some space. and can route cables through that for easy access.

Just wondering if its worth investing in advance router (Ubiquiti or Mikrotik) then HG659b.

I was wondering why the cables were coming from the corner, when there was a 4 socket plug for them to use - I was presuming that was effectively a quick and dirty patch panel.

So what you're saying is that those RJ45 are not in use at all?

Hi, yeah was wondering the same hence my question earlier on as to how the ONT was connected, and i agree, first thing I would do is terminate the cables on the keystones in the faceplate.

Yes they are not in use. All the end wires have RJ45 and plugged in directly into ONT. That 4 pin thing is useless.

Yes they are not in use. All the end wires have RJ45 and plugged in directly into ONT. That 4 pin thing is useless.

Actually so far that was the assumption. As ideally ONT LAN#1 should be connected to that 4pin RJ45 socket in some way but thats not the case. LAN#1 is servicing the lounge only.

I have to take out the whole box to look at the connections.

and if I do that how it will work out? I will still need a router to connect to internet in patch panel. and wire the 4pin RJ45 socket to connect to router.

does that sound right?

For the router I am going for Edgerouter X after much consideration.

The idea would be that rather than the cables coming into the box from the corner, they would terminate into the back of that RJ45 socket. So you remove those long wires, and get some space back.

The router would still have to go in the box, connect to the ONT. You then get short network 'patch' cables to connect from the router to that socket as required - there would be at least three of them one for each room you want to make 'live'

Sorry..

So 3 LANs coming to COM panel patched at the back of face plate. Added a ER-X into mix.Got it for 90$ in PBTECH deal this weekend.

Now ONT lan1 goes into ER-X eth0. ER-X does the internet connection via VLAN config. Followed the earlier fixed post someone did in the same forum for ER-X config. ER-X eth1,2, 3 goes into faceplate so connection completes.

Tv is directly connected to wall port in Lounge. HG659b is moved to room2 as an AP. I have only one issue to resolve about DMS server on HG659B not visible on LAN connection.
