Imagine you've setup a massive site full of their cameras with the necessary servers and in 6 months that will no longer be supported. I'ts just such bad practice and as the term seems popular now "throws their deployers under the bus". I can understnad how upset the people are on that super long forum thread of the installers complaining.

I still have the original UniFi gen1 cameras and these were stopped being supported from quite an old software release. As I understand it, I can't actually get new cameras and have them run on the same NVR. I guess going forward the software and cameras need to be dissagregated.

I have been buying Ubiquiti products for quite a while (switches, wireless access points, p2p wireless etc.). An attitude and non-professional approach like this completely puts me off their products....

would be interested to know of an example of a IT company that supports hardware products in perpetuity?

Golden rule - never invest in proprietary stuff :-)

Even my decommissioned ER4 has become a cold standby unit.

I'm not suggesting in perpetuity but most technology companies will provide usually years of warning about a drop in support for something. Even if it was just a drop in support that wouldn't be so bad, but taking their online video service offline with such little warning is really bad and embarrasing for those who sold Ubiquiti's products as their name gets tarnished with the upset end customers. If it were say at least 2 years notice it may be more pallatable but the larger vendors will usually provide even longer than that.

I was remembering a while ago I managed to convince unifi protect to work on a ODroid C2 before we purchased a Cloud Key... And managed to make it work.

YMMV and it is completely unsupported and most likely against the Unifi terms of service.
