I have Amplifi HD Mesh Router near one end, and one mesh point central in a three bedroom house.

It works great, no complaints, good value.

So much better than previous Wifi routers. The equipment seems to be lasting well. Other Linksys, Netgear routers I've had failed within a couple of years.

Would consider an Amplifi Alien in future.

I do not believe you can adopt a UnFi AP over its WiFi. So if your laptop does Ethernet, then just plug it in to your network on that to set up the AP. If not, you may need to get an external Ethernet port for your laptop. Or if you have an old AP or WiFi on the router you can turn on again temporarily, connect via that. Or borrow another AP from someone. But you will need to do the adoption via the AP's Ethernet connection, however you connect the laptop to your network.

My laptop is one of these think Thinkpads that don't come with an Ethernet port. Might be time to get one that plugs in to the USB slot. Thanks for the advice.

I temporarily re-enabled Wifi from the Vodafone router and was able to adopt the AP to the controller that way. Next stop to purchase another AP and cable it in!

I'm reading some of the discussion about "Multiple APs Same SSID" on https://community.ui.com/. They seem to recommend that to achieve this I should:

Give all APs the same SSID and password.
Give the APs different channels.
Turn down the power on the APs.

Does anyone here have any advice to confirm this or otherwise? I am also wondering what part of this actually requires the unifi controller to do.

I want to get it working well, but also don't have the time to become WiFi Guru Of The Year and am happy to take advice from those who've done it before :-)

Hi, so yes just use the single SSID and passwords, if you create a wireless network in the controller by default it will push it out to all APs in that network.

Yes you should use different channels for each AP in the 2.4GHz band use 20MHz BW and only use channels 1,6,11 not others, in the 5GHz band I recommend use 40MHz BW and use one of channels 36,44,52,60. I also recommend under bandsteering to set prefer 5GHz.

Thanks very much. So have set bandsteering to prefer 5G and removed override of WLAN settings on existing AP so it's one WLAN for the whole site. Existing AP set to use channels 6 and 44 and will set the second AP to use channels 11 and 52 when it arrives.

We now have three UniFi UAP-AC-PROs, one in each corner of the house connected by CAT6 back to the fibre, and it works well. Full bars in almost every part of the house. Thanks for all the advice!
