nztim: Crazy... multiple eftpos terminals swipe card systems , ams music system ,switches and routers all running off a series of multiboxes “shoved” into a cupboard under the front counter.

But it's got built in surge protector so should be all good 😃

I think the leading question is: if the power goes off, can the business trade at all?
If the business is a bar (like the OP) or a gym or a restaurant, the answer is probably "No": their fridges mustn't be opened, their glass sanitisers don't work, it's all dark inside and the airconditioning is off, their "Infinity" gas water heaters actually need a mains electricity supply to work, etc.
In that case, the UPS which might (or might not!) be protecting their EFTPOS system is of little value or relevance

Hey,

Just a bit of clarity around a pub install like this, in case anyone finds themselves doing an urgent friday night job :)

The Edgerouter is from a company called COMS and is usually used for controlling the gaming machines jackpots and payouts only. Their kit is usually all plugged in to the Edgerouter nicely, and the edge router is plugged into the sites network/router for internet connectivity and to firewall off the gaming system. Their installers usually do a nice tidy job, so not sure whats going on here. Some one else may have been in there - possibly the Fibre installer. With these it is best to just make sure the port labeled WAN on the router is connected to the sites internet, and there are 4 green circles on the COMS PoS unit ( sites know what this is ). If not tell them to ring COMS

The Router and the Edimax switch ( for some reason all pubs seems to have edimax switches) will most likely be the sites connection and be used for POS/EFTPOS and possibly the security cameras ( although they sometimes are on completely separate connections)

This is by far not the worst pub install i have seen - and yep usually the pub doesn't want to spend any money so installs can get done quickly and by someones best mate cousin etc

The worst bit is usually faulty cabling, as it is years old, or unlabelled cabling so you can't tell what PoS is plugged in where :(

Oh.... and the dust and stickiness from pre-mix drinks machines lol

At least its not VDSL going through 4 different comms rooms of a shopping centre. Names of comms rooms don't help if the centre management don't know where all of them are, and the pairs aren't always on labelled krone blocks so there's a lot of time with the toner. Should have swapped out the filter first...

Time to find a new industry!

Maybe its a new business venture for someone.... "PubNet" - tidy their network up for a dozen beers. If I had the time, I'd do it. Road trip/pub crawl !

Shopping centre installs are horrible.

And, why oh why will they not let fibre be installed?

We have quite a few stores in shopping malls. Only 2 are able to have fibre installed (and it is mall management that doesn't allow it in the other 6).

Westfield are slowly coming around, we have a few of those, and one of them has sent letter saying it can now be ordered.

I don't think that this is the correct way that fiber should be installed.

This reminds me alot of my install here. under the house that fibre is wrapped around the beams....

I seem to have misplaced the photo for that though.

Still have this shot though. i was shocked to see the fibre just loose held by a clip like this!

i very carefully adjusted it to ensure it doesn't get bumped and yanked out and the put a bit of tape over the outta cable - just to make sure something doesnt clip under it and yank..
