chevrolux: - Run cables to stationary devices

- Coax is a waste of time in 2020, except for Sky.

- For 100m^2, a single, high-quality, well-placed, access point is going to be totally sufficient.

With a plethora of streaming services available nowadays a fast connection makes even SKY redundant inmho.. :)

Unless you are a sports nut and like watching it actually live and not 2 minute delay

kyhwana2:

First of all, do not let sparkies do network wiring, they're usually crap at it.

Secondly, wire cat6 to every single room, at least 4 ports to the living room and office, two ports to every other room such as bedrooms/kitchen/etc. You'll thank me later.

You'll also want a central place for the "comms closet" where your ONT/Routers/switches will live. (Get a decent 16/24 port switch)

Wifi is not a replacement for wired ethernet.

https://www.tcf.org.nz/industry/standards-compliance/infrastructure-connections/premises-wiring/ has guidelines. It's better to build all the networking stuff in now as retrofitting it later will cost more/be way more painful.

+1 for this

When we built we only had the lounge and rumpus wired for ethernet. As they are only single runs I have to have switches in each room.

Also kids have PCs now and these are on the opposite wall to where the switch is.

My advice, and what I'd do if we built again, is install at least one electrical socket on each wall in bedrooms - we did too and guess what, things changed and wish we'd put sockets in every wall. Also as per.above I'd have multiple ethernet jack's to lounge etc. This gives you options, right now one of my mesh routers is in my Comms cabinet (so wasted) as this feeds the other ethernet sockets. Would've preferred a switch in there and have the modem somewhere else.

BTW our sparky from NME did the networking and he did a good job.

Hi, if you use a managed switch and vlans you can put the router on the end of a single cable, only downside is if you want full GigE WAN then it wont quite make it, but not far off, could be a good compromise.
