Google/Nest Wifi allows you to tag groups of devices or individual devices. You can then disable the internet for each tag with the touch of a button, and set up time based rules for turning things on and off. You can also enforce safe-search on all the devices in a group/tag.

Don't think it can do time limits though (ie 40mins internet a day). App level and usage controls tend to need to be done through Google Family link.

I ended up with a TPlink AX50 to replace our router

The parental controls on the AX50 worked with the Unifi AP’s but I have removed those in the meantime to test out the Wi-Fi 6 speed and range

The kids devices are added into groups under their name, and you can set bedtimes and daily time limits for each child. I have it set so the internet turns off at 8pm on school nights, and doesn’t turn on until 3.30pm the next day. On weekends the internet turns on at 9am as we had a problem with them getting up super early to play games.

There is also an on/off toggle for each user. The parental controls are cloud based so can be changed when I’m not at home.

You can filter apps, so I added every tv into a tv group and turned off YouTube. If they want to watch YouTube it can be done using their daily time limit. Their own user groups are restricted to age group appropriate content.

Issues we have had:

If they use more than one device at once such as a pc for roblox and an iPad to talk to their friends, the time limit is used twice as fast.

If they don’t leave the game when their time runs out the session keeps going until they go back to the homepage.

If they are playing Minecraft it can still be used offline, which doesn’t immediately get them outside.

There is a lot of negotiating for extra time, such as Can I empty the dishwasher for another half hour, which is an administrative overhead.

The last issue was the phone line, the AX50 doesn’t have a port for a phone so our alarm doesn’t call us anymore. We haven’t decided whether to upgrade the alarm or setup an ATA yet.
