That's likely done so that the WAN port can have functions available on the switch chip available to it that the CPU's eth0 might be lacking.

Well I went out and got the D-Link DIR-X1860 Router, even with my devices being Wi-Fi AC, my speeds have almost doubled and speed through ethernet is around 940Mbps. So I am very happy.
