...and it's supported by dd-wrt according to:

A couple of months ago I sent out a Linksys WRT54GL (http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54GL) router to Tony Hughes to run Tomato. AFAIK the model is still available in stores here (and it runs DD-WRT fine)

Oooooo.... nice thought guys- we have a Linksys WAP54G as our wireless access point for everyone in the house except me ;)

I never thought to put the DD-WRT on the AP! THAT might just be THE answer ... for now :)

Just so you all know - part of the slight difficulty in this house is our only tech store locally is DSE, and our local doesn't have huge stock levels. I tend to prefer to go in and talk to someone rather than randomly ordering things online. The other difficulty being that there is one income supporting 4 of us, and the earner has set a cap of about $150 on replacing the current modem/router

All in one units don't usually have support from Tomato, DD-WRT etc because the modem chipset drivers are closed source and proprietary.

Darn!

And to buy a Modem and then a Router costs too much

Guess I'll just have to regularly go into the student's room and growl

;)

Apparently the Linksys WAP54G will take DD-WRT, but looking into the documentation it is rather sticky.

Surely somebody manufacturing sees the market for this sort of monitoring

I replied in your other thread but most countries have no need for monitoring as they have un-metered internet services (no caps).

This is what I would do if starting from scratch:

TP Link TD8840 Modem: ~$67
http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=9314

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Router: ~$125
http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=12378

Gargoyle firmware for the router: free
http://www.gargoyle-router.com/

Setup similar to this (but TP Link hardware and Gargoyle firmware)
http://www.ben.geek.nz/2006/11/adsl-routing-solution-in-detail/

However...

If you can reuse your existing router and find a 2nd hand modem (or already have one) that does half bridge you can save quite a bit of $$.

I have the WAP54GL as my main router - be careful it's different from the G, I think the G has less memory or something. They're really old but still work fine, so you might find one second hand if yours isn't up to it.

Hi Ragnor - Looks like I'll be going the way you suggested

And the TP-Link items suggested above have been ordered! :)

They seem new enough, but not too new to be just what is needed here.

Thanks for the recommendations Ragnor.

Now to wait quietly until they arrive!!! ;)

And they're here and running... in original mode, not flashed to DD-WRT or Gargoyle yet

is that part very complicated to do?
