Stuff, but good point - who's got 25mm conduit at $1.50/m Sir?

Quite a tricky decision, there's really not a whole lot in it.

NZ Pipe, Otahuhu. I buy plumbing parts from them quite regularly.

That's not for burial though is it, burial is $2.50/m what's the point of conduit if you can't bury it?

(hell, may as well just lay the cable on the leaf litter / forest floor).

So, for the shed, will later today procure the (below) 3 fibre related items as per SirHumphreyAppleby suggestion, unless anyone has objections.

Wheres a good place to order a couple of decent quality DC 5V 2.5/5.5mm NZ Power Supplies?

Does this look right, get fibre data to the shed etc?

SirHumphreyAppleby:

Fibre doesn't necessarily mean 10Gb. I'm using it at 1Gb and plan on deploying 10Gb in my own home shortly (in fact, the first of the gear should arrive tomorrow).

These are the products I plan to be using to connect a sleepout to the main house. These haven't been installed yet (waiting on construction work), but the equipment was tested for a few days and seems to work fine.

Armoured cable... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003346163503.html

SFP switches... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001171517416.html (NZ power supply required, 2.5/5.5mm)

SFP module... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32901075730.html

Note, I am using BiDi single mode modules which are more expensive than other options, but they allow you to use a single fibre.

The seller will ask you what type of switch you're using the SFP modules with as some (more expensive) switches are picky about compatibility to lock you into their product range. Just tell them you're using the modules with the switches they provide (same seller) as it won't matter in that case.

For power supplies, I just used what I had sitting around. I mentioned the need for 2.5/5.5 as these aren't as common as 2.1/5.5 which most DC power plugs seem to have, but some adaptors will support both 2.1 and 2.5mm. For home use, I'd just get them off AliExpress (2.5/5.5 is commonly used for CCTV), but if you want something local (and theoretically standards compliant), Jaycar is probably your best bet.

The units I received were power bricks with a very short length of cable to a US plug, so you could simply replace the plug with a AU/NZ one.

The only power supply I've ever had a concern about, getting very hot and producing a worrying smell, was the wall wart supplied with a USB 2 hub purchased in NZ from a reputable supplier.

Consider also https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33016288953.html

Same supplier, but only one SFP port, and 1/2/4/8 RJ45 ports, depending on your needs.

Personally, I would stick with the 8 port version unless there was a compelling reason not to. E.g. If you're sticking it in a small recessed cabinet, smaller may be preferred.

Thank you again,

So, the stuff you've linked us to, SPF Switches + Modules etc, are both seemingly coming from JT-COM, do we need to do anything else, or just buy them?

Need to look for/add couple of DC 5V 2.5/5.5mm AU / NZ Power Supplies.

Cheers SirHumphreyAppleby, said to someone last night that 'it's really hard (painful) talking to non-geeks/noobie's like us, sorry !' 😀

We'll stick with what's in the cart but smaller might be good in other situations for sure:

I can't find the power supplies to check, but I believe the unit shipped with a 12V 2A power supply. It wasn't identical to the pictures, but it was labelled 5-12V on the bottom as per the specs.

What you have in the cart is all you need. I don't like spending other peoples' money, so I'd wait and see if anyone has any objections :)

Good memory, one of the reviews online shows the below image.

Looking for some AU/NZ power supplies now... you seem fairly on-to-it but prudence, give it a few hours.

Say 7 pm deadline for objections

😆

Can see these power bricks at PBT, think they look about right, but at $25 a pop about a third the cost of the SPF Switches 😐

That should work just fine. If you're near a store, they should be able to give you a better price (no more than $21).

I'd go down the Ali route.

Currently struggling to find them on Ali... there's these on TM but 2.1/5.5mm plugs.

Excellent, we're obviously even useless at searching.

Your generator quality assistance brings us to (below).

Deadline for objections closes in 8 minutes now, at 1545h

Before the modules go up another $7

This look about it ?

Thank you very much for all that help 'Sir''.

PS: How are you with 100m trenches 🤣
