I assume you are pinging the xbox from the vista machine via IP address, right?

Could you post the IP Address, subnet mask and default gateway for the vista machine and for the xbox?

Xbox:
IP : 10.1.1.101
Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 10.1.1.254

Vista PC:
IP : 10.1.1.100
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway : 10.1.1.254

I am pinging the xbox from the vista machine.
I have changed the default gateway on the Xbox to the vista pc's ip but this also did not work.

that looks ok - can you look at the output of "arp -a" on the vista machine and see if there is a listing for the xbox IP and that it matches the MAC address for the Xbox?

Does the DWL bridge have any firewalling software?

There is no listing for the xbox in the table.
I am unsure if the DWL has firewall software. I will check later and post back here.

Diagram is crap. DI524UP is a router, it has two wired interfaces, draw it as such. What connects to ADSL router, its LAN interface or its WAN interface.

A few posts back states the 524up has DHCP disabled so therefore connects to ADSL modem via LAN.
Is that not how it works?? WAN on the router does not exist as such!

The DWL has no firewall software.
I have connected the DWL straight to the laptop via ethernet cable.
(So eliminate the Xbox)
I am able to connect to the internet i.e the laptop with the DWL connected finds my wireless network. I can connect and browse the internet.
I am able to ping the wireless router & ADSL modem but not the vista pc from the laptop.
I am unable to ping the laptop or the DWL from the Vista pc.

can you plug in the laptop directly to the ADSL or wireless router, and test pinging to and from the vista pc?

If you can, then that points to something odd with the DWL unit ... if not, then that would tend to suggest that there is something up with the Vista PC (You mentioned that you turned off the firewall on the vista box before - is there any other security type software on the vista machine?)

When the vista pc and laptop is plugged into the router (nothing else), they can ping each other. When plug the DWl into the router as well, everything turns to custard. No internet, the pc's can't ping each other, unable to ping the DWL.
I am assuming their is somethign wrong with the DWL. As soon as I unplug it from the adsl then everything works like it should (except I am unabe to ping the DWL obviously)

I only use Windows firewall and McAfee Antivirus.

Hard reset of the DWL does not work either.

I have eliminated the DWL as well.
Desktop and laptop plugged into the adsl...all is fine. They can ping each other and access shared folders.
As soon as I unplug the laptop from the modem (so connect wirelessly to the router) then they are not able to ping each other. Whether they are assigned static ip's or not it does not make a difference.

It seems the wireless router (524UP) or the Vista machine may have issues. Virtually everything is disabled in the router. It is merely acting as an access point.

I am about to give up but it will bother me for a long time.

It sounds like you are having bridging issues.

Is the connection between the 2 wireless devices a WDS bridge or a client mode? I have found client mode to give these issues because they use mac address spoofing and other nasty hacks to get around wireless devices only being able to associate one mac address, which is the radio in the wireless client device.

edit:

and if its anything like the dlink 900AP in client mode, if you access the wireless device over wifi, the connected device will not work. Changing the connected device to the accesspoint results it in disaccoiting from the accesspoint and not reassociating with it untill power cycled.

Gah - Looks like my response got eaten!

Have you considered using the wireless unit and bridging through to the ADSL router (rather than using the LAN side of the ADSL router).
