I dont think the Thompsons can be placed into half bridge mode which is what you would need. If all you are requiring is WiFi capablility, then you can continue to use the Thompson as the modem and NAT router and TPlink simply as ethernet switch and WiFi AP, this following thread explains how to do it albeit with a different brand modem, but get back to us if you have difficulty.

The Thomson can do PPPaA half bridge/dhcp spoofing and also PPPoA to PPTP, however you have to configure this via terminal or by uploading a custom config ini.

For $50 you can get a TP Link TD8840 so it's probably not worth your time mucking around hacking the Thomson config imo.
