Looking at the ancient phone jacks I'm removing, I notice there is some circuitry in them too: 



I'll assume that circuitry is no longer necessary, since everyone is recommending the use of standard RJ45 for phone jacks now...

Hi, thats a Master socket the big yellow thing is a ringer capacitor, no longer needed in 2wire systems, R1 is the line test resistor not needed if unless you have a wiring maintenance contract with Telecom in which case they prefer to use a seperate test module and SP1 is a spark gap (overvolts arrestor), not needed unless you intend to take a lighting stike and the arrestor at the exchange or cabinet should do this task for you.
