D1NZ: try pop your street address in and see.

It says I'm covered ADSL2+, but it doesn't show exact locations for the cabinets etc.

Today I received my TD-8840. Hasn't improved speeds any, but at least it's not overheating every day like the rta, or dropping out like the AM300:

Hi, have had a look at your location and it would seem that you are in the primary coverage of the Birkenhead Exchange so no need for a cabinet, however unless the cable goes by some wild route all over the town I cannot see where 2km of cable would fit.

I am not too sure where Birkenhead exchange is, but based on the VDSL2 coverage I have guessed and cannot see more than 1km of road at max to your address. So that implies that there is 12-15dB more attenuation than expected.

Obviously we have not looked at your house wiring, this could be where this extra loss is, in 70% or more of DSL faults house wiring is the issue, have you tried an isolation test, sorry if this has been covered previously in this or other thread, but if you want to get the most out of you DSL and want to get Chorus (via your ISP) to look into it you first must check you house wiring is up to scratch.

Purhaps you could detail where the exchange is, should you know that info.

Cyril

I just re-did the house wiring in CAT6, but really there is sweet FA between the demarc and modem. Just ~3M of CAT6 between demarc and ADSL master splitter and then about 0.5M of CAT3 to the modem.

BTW, I terminated with these gel filled crimps, which is what telecom had used when I looked in the demarc:

What about the outside phone line (between street and demarc)?

Hi, that sounds like you did all you can, just check though, in the demarc there is only the one line (going to the filter) coming off the leadin from the street, no other taps off to other sockets.

Yes the scotch locs are fine, so sound like the street wiring is either bad or goes for a merry dance around the block before it gets to you, not uncommon.

Is the leadin from the street overhead or underground. Is it round black poly cable or non twisted older stuff.

My street is wired underground, but 2/3 of the line to my house is still in the air:

Red: Underground
Green: Above ground

EDIT: Total distance between the street and me is ~70M

This is the line coming into the demarc:

I would say your line in the street is part of the issue especially if you normally get a bit of fluctuation on that SNR number, it should normally sync with 12dB noise margin and will go down if there is interferance.

You didn't say whether you filtered the burglar alarm but I presume thats what you connected the gel crimps to... Alarms will cause this type of problem if you didn't get a master filter. The phone lines in some parts of birkenhead/northcote seem to be pretty long, sometimes running all the way to Birkdale Exchange, maybe due to the stream etc. Hopefully the worst of them have been cabinetised.

Time to find a new industry!

No, I have no alarm. The gel crimps are between the line and CAT6 and master filter etc.
