In the end I went for a Draytek Vigor 120, and a WRT320N running DD-WRT. Although not 5GHz, it resolved all of my issues, added 802.11n along with 1Gb LAN and gave me a very stable connection. There were a few teething issues but they have been resolved, see here:

I've got a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND in the office which seems to have good range and is at an excellent price. I might put dd-wrt or openwrt on it at some point but at the moment I'm running the vanilla firmware.
Doesn't have ADSL but does have 4xgigabit lan ports plus gigabit WAN.

What sort of thruput do you get on it from wan to lan? IME with a previous "gigabit router" it was only able to deliver about 100 megabit between interfaces either routing or natting which made for somewhat of a disappointment.
