Dont let them on your network if you dont control the computers.

Or get the other party to move the internet connection into their name on the first warning or kick them off it then.

You get 2 warnings where nothing happens, use them to your advantage.

yeah i cant really do that, the internet is under my name, but its a shared line, but i also cant really tell them what to do/put on their computers.

was just hoping for a router solution.

Exactly. If they are going to get you in trouble as the account holder, they should be taking over the account. If you are concerned they will move out and leave you stranded without internet/phone, perhaps you can sign up for the phone service under your name and let someone else take on the broadband.

Time to find a new industry!

yeah thats not really a viable solution, i have a great deal with a isp because i know someone working there so i cant change the name. also it more of accidental usage, say somone stays the weekend and wants access to my wifi but has a torrent app open the entire weekend (just because most of them run hidden away in the system tray). im more looking for a router solution for that.

i dont want to make someone else have to signup an extra internet connection under their name, i dont want to admin every machine on the network, i was hoping for a router solution which could stop this for certain computers or better a guest network (and i actually thought there might be custom firmware out there that did this, via ports or packet sniffing or something).

i still think dd-wrt router + astrill vpn is the answer. route all/international traffic through vpn when you need

yeah but i dont want to have my online banking or their online banking through a vpn. and that still doesnt really stop the torrent downloading, just hides it.

wondering if i can set up a guest network with every port blocked except 80, 443, 25, 143, 110. i think you can configure a torrent client to run over port 80, but requires configuration (and the people im worried about doing this, wont know how to do that).

i may have to open up a couple more for PSN (http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=241), but for the most part i hope that will work.

just wondering if anyone has used that netgear router (or similar model) and knows if the guest network can assign which ports are opened etc.

Posted this in another thread but its relevant here too

There are ways of dealing with p2p, we have had to do it for a hostel/backpackers. We are using zentyal which is a software Firewall/transparent proxy, it has layer 7 filtering/deep packet inspection, mixed with blocking .torrent files, using opendns as the dns server to block p2p trackers, proxy servers and a lot of the torrent hosting sites has basically nuked all p2p, there are ways around it but you will have to be fairly knowledgeable to do so.
Only problem so far that we havn't got an answer for is that it has also killed Skype as it uses p2p ports.. working on that one

Just a quick reply for Raven,

You can do exactly what you want with a PFSense box with VLAN's, though you must have a wireless access point that also supports VLAN's.

Basically you would connect to the main VLAN (lets say VLAN1). VLAN 1 would be unrestricted, business as usual. It would also have its on SSID (wireless name) and password, that only you know.

VLAN2 could be filtered at multiple levels (PFSense can do level 7) and have common torrenting ports blocked. It can also be traffic shaped (speed lowered). Guests would access this via the guest SSID (wireless name). By connecting to the "Guest" connection they would effectively be on their own restricted network, but still have internet!

You can also make the 2 talk together locally, but that starts to get more complicated.
