Getting someone in to do a job that isn't straight forward will cost more because they have to check various options and perhaps investigate how to get into the roof space.

Try poking something down the hole the previous cable came through to see where it went. Sounds like they installed it after-market the same as you, so each part of the pathway has to come out somewhere accessible. If you can guess where they connected it to, you can work back from that end as well.

Time to find a new industry!

That was the plan, looks I'm going to have to go crawling in the roof.

...and take your digital camera will you, take lots of photos and post them on the forum.

Also draw a sketch of the house and post that as well, with some rough measurements.

The more you tell us, the more we can offer you feedback.

Even if you are getting someone to do this, the more research you do and the more feed back you get the quicker, cheaper and better it will get done.

All the information I'm asking for is the stuff I'd want before doing the job or quoting on it.  It's also the stuff that will making getting some quotes faster and more accurate.

Do you have a phone jack in your room? If you do you may be able to pull some cat back up with it.

I do have a phone jack in my room and pulling it through would definitely work to get the line up to the roof, but my options from there are a bit harder. I will post tonight explain my situation a lot better.

I live in central Auckland. If I decide to get someone to give us a price, I'll make sure to contact you. Do you have a business website or something similar?

OK better explanation here:

Here are plans of the house (NOT precise):

Top view d/stairs: https://imgur.com/SYLIh
Top view u/stairs: https://imgur.com/3AV0k

Where the internet comes into the house. Please note, there is an RJ45 socket under the bench labeled "court". I have no idea where that goes.

Here is the main computer and the modem and router. Apologies for the mess, I just got in from work.

These are the cables I see in the roof, I think they're phone lines:

Here is where the cables enter the roof (I presume). This looks the same the other end of the cable (entering my room).

This is where the ethernet cable used to come into my room, see the small black hole.

I hope this can help. I will be on tomorrow but not tonight I'm hella tired. Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Ok, now we're starting to get a picture for what's going on.

I've got a few questions now...

1.  what are your dsl speeds like?

I'm assuming you've got filters on each of the extensions in the house rather than a central filter on the end of the lead in.

I'd be checking the sync speeds on your modem.

2.  What's the floor made of?

Is it a wooden floor between lower and upper levels?  If it's reinforced concrete then that's not going to help the wifi at all.

3.  What power is your existing wireless AP?

Is it one of those combined adsl modem/wifi ap things?

At best they're shocking, at worst they just don't work at all.

Do you have an android phone that you can install wifi thingo on or a laptop to do a signal strength test.

The quickest way I can see to sort this out would be to punch a hole outside where that down stairs phone jack is and run a cable up the outside of the building to the roof then drop it down inside your room.  But I couldn't tell at a glance if your phone jack down stairs was on an external wall.

I also have no idea if that would be ok on the out side of the building.

Rough guide, it would take me an hour and a half to sort out putting a conduit on the out side of the wall, then a hour in the roof to pick it up and drop it inside your room, then an hour to terminate, test and mount sockets at least is what I'd allow.

So I would allow 4 hours at least to sort this at $100 to $120 an hour.  So that gives you some idea about budget.

Some of the guys suggested some D/EoP adaptors but iirc you said you might have power on more than one phase in the house (though why that would be the case I'm not sure).

If it was me I'd pop into DSE and get a couple.  They have a 14 day return policy, so you can at least use them to test out if they're going to work.  That would get data in your room.

I might also have a look at that wifi ap.  If it's a combined unit then it won't have power to pump past the kitchen bench.

You also need to know what other noise you have in the area as that also upsets this stuff.

hth.

Don't have a website that I promote right now - on my list to do. But ask around the forums, I've done a bit of work for a few people here. Certainly not striaght forward looking job, so site visit would deffenietly be needed to scope the work out, and I'd be sure to give you some good advice too, so what ever work is done will have future expansion in mind.

Hmmm, better double my quote to work in a messy office (just don't look at mine though hehe).

Good I'm kinda glad someone didn't come back at me saying that 4 hours was way to long to run up the outside of the building and though the roof.

I agree, a site visit would be worth paying for from someone with some clue even if he ends up doing it with EoP or wifi.

100-120/hour?! Man I need to start cabling in Auckland!! We charge $70/hour down here in palmy lol.

But yea I think you hit it on the head in terms of duct up the side and in the roof and then across to the room. Something I always look for in multi-storys is wardrobes that are in line. Im wondering of in your kitchen there is a pantry that is underneath a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms. Blast a drill through there and you will get a cable from under the floor to the roof in no time. (cant remember what you said in terms of under-floor access). I wouldnt have been so liberal with the time though. I would say more like 2 hours to run and terminating/testing would take less than half an hour for a single point-to-point. Dont get a sparky to do it get a data cabling company to do it. If you get a quote see how much time they allow and if it is more than 3 hours personally I would just say do it on charge-up.

Christchurch it depends who you are... if I like you then beer... if you piss me off then $150 an hour, 4 hour call out min and you'll need to pay $250 for test gear but we will give you a cert on the cable cat when we're done. ;)

But yes, I was attempting not to under state this.  I can put a surface socket on a cable in about 10 minutes if I have beer in my hand at the time.

I do agree with the comment about getting a cable co rather than sparkie though.  A guy who does this 10 times an hour might cost twice as much an hour, but will do it in 10% of the time.

Stuff does also depend on what the home owner is happy with.  Some days you can just tell that someone just won't be happy and other times they're happy with conduit or even neat cable down the inside of a wardrobe.

D

Edit:  ps - I will add that I wanted to set a price that wouldn't get me lynched by Auckland cablers, but would make a happy OP when he found he could get it done for less than I suggested :)

Phexx: Hi, I am currently using a wireless connection for the internet at the moment. Unfortunaly, it is the longest possible distance from the router to my adapter. This means that the connection is both slow, and VERY unreliable (random disconnects).

I am trying to persuade the house owner (my dad) to wire ethernet to my room. This is because I am going to be adding in a new gaming PC soon, another console (additional to my current 360) and hopefully a server. This means that I would need use a switch to connect them all together, and I would need good LAN speed. Obviously this means a wired connection is needed.

So, how much (very appox) would it cost to get an electricition to wire the cable. Please not that there is already phone lines through out the house whcih I don't use. I understand that the cost is extremly varible, however, I would like a vaige idea before I try to get a sparky round.

It would be cheaper and more effective to buy a Wireless N-capable router that you can add more sensitive antennae too. The same goes for the wireless adapter in the PC.

It helps to have a box-like directional antenna as at least one of the antenna on the router, so you can 'point' it toward where the signal needs to be the strongest. We're able to get 118Mbps from the upper front of the house to the lower level back this way.

I wired a house for 100mb ethernet 8 years ago and it cost me about $600. The risk in doing it yourself is you may damage something (walls, wiring, pipes) that is expensive to fix. I don't know how handy you are.

Wireless N with the right antenna can be faster than 100MB ethernet. It is at my house. I wouldn't wire up for anything less than a gigabit network.
