Shouldnt do, could have been pulled thru to there to put a panic button in or something and just left unused.

I got really excited when I found that cable up in the alarm panel, until I found the other end in your room not connected. This was not the missing link :(

Hi gang,

Sorry to post hijack firstly.

Been messing about with my smartwired place over the last few days.

Have got a two RJ45 plug panel in the office. The top is labelled "phone" , the bottom "data" (under the cover panel for tidyness obviously but I digress.....).

Anyways attached the probe to the bottom RJ45 and the one that comes from behind my TV. We get connection however the red light doesnt go out when its turned off at the other end - which is wierd right????

Took the who shebang off and it appears that the phone is "piggybacking" off the ethernet cable next to it.(using the redundant wires I assume - but wont be good for gigabyte ethernet on this basis???)

Guess thats fine as all i want to do is stream media.

What are your thoughts?

I guess i could rip out the phone connection part and plug up the data ones but myski is plugged into the phone jack behind the TV and dont want to piss about too much.

Have ordered a Netgear powerline solution but if the wiring is there and can be sorted Id rather use this.

My router does have ports for it though...

Id just be happy with working ethernet tbh

Hi, there is no issue with the way its currently wired, obviously not ideal but if Fast Ethernet is fine (which in 99% of home applications it is) then just leave it unless you have the skills to easily return it to full standard.

I prefer to leave the permanent wiring as fully wired, and use splitters/adaptors if you want to use phone and data on the same circuit, the outcome is identical to what you have, but you have the option to revert to GigE without tools or effort.

Must be some error in it then as when I do connect it I get nothing.

The tester/probe got connection but when one side turned off the other didnt - it still had lights flashing!

My thoughts were that it hasnt ever been wired correctly... hmm

If it is a cheap LED sequancing tester then the lights flashing on the transmitter when the receiver is disconnected means that there is something on the line connecting pairs together, most 100 meg ethernet devices will short the other 2 pairs out so will cause that, and the transformers will load the transmitter enough to light its LEDs.

Get a cable tracer and see if it even goes to where you think it does. With the caliber of most sparkys taking on data wiring it wouldnt suprise me if it went thru some chocblocs somewhere and had a tv antenna spliced into it or something.
