Given all this is so new to you, why not just go with a pair of Powerline adapters, as discussed earlier in this thread? Under $100 (the cheaper ones, at about $70, are slower, but would prob. do for your needs) and you're home and hosed, no need to worry about CAT6, what plugs to use, drilling holes, getting dirty under the house...

I extended my parents' wifi network on Saturday, connecting their new and old modem/routers (the latter as the 'extender' via a pair of Powerline adapters - and that's definitely something that could be done with a glass of wine in one's hand! Took only a few minutes, and the steps have been explained above (disabling DHCP, assigning static IP address, using same SSID....); the Powerline adapters were so easy to get working I thought I must be doing something wrong!

Often the biggest hassle is finding where in the router's settings to make the necessary changes, but even if not clear from the instruction manual a quick Google always helps.

(So, in summary - you're going to have to do the adjustments on the router either way, but the big hassle's going to be the cabling - that's where these adapters will be just so much easier.)

I I had a play with a short cable to see if I could get the settings done before going any further. It seems to work but got a bit stumped by the following..

1. I assume I set up security and key the same for both?
2. Is there a way of knowing which router a device is connecting to at a given time?
3. Do I need to do enter the MAC address of either router on the other one? I haven't and it seems to work but in other instructions I find they do refer to this.
4. How do I access the set up for the second extender router? Using 192.168.1.1 naturally takes me to the first and entering the new IP I have set for the second 192.168.9.99 doesn't take me anywhere.

1. Yes, if you like. I set mine up different so I know what access point I'm using.
2. No, other than mentioned above.
3. No.
4. You have to change the IP of the first router while it's directly connected to your computer.

One of these guides may help, I used one but I forget which. Wireless repeater. Repeater Bridge.

If the primary router is 192.168.1.1 then the second one would under most circumstances have to be 192.168.1.99

I'm about to do the same thing but using the dynalink as the modem router and a technicolor as the wireless extender. Do you have to have to two connected directly or will it work the same going through a switch?
