I totally except that VDSL extenders are the 'proper' solution and will give better data transfer rates. But I can't expect that is the best option for joe bloggs to get some network connectivity out to the shed for his SOHO business.
All they want to to do is check email, google things, use a VoIP service, and log on to Xero. A low cost wireless link will do this perfectly and be half the cost of VDSL extenders.

May be this is why I'm not in sales....

VDSL Ethernet extenders can be more cost effective when professionally installed. Once you take the labour component often involved setting up the wireless link, the price difference can swing in favour of VDSL Ethernet extender.

I really don't agree with that.

Rounding it down VDSL extenders will be $300 to the customer, $600 total.
Assuming the existing cabling is easy to hunt down (which more often than not isn't the case) let's say it will take an hour to re-arrange it and have each end of the pair terminated on RJ45's.
So $90 for labour, about $60 for parts (two PDL plates & RJ45 modules.
Job total $750 excl GST.

Loco M5 + Wall mount bracket will be about $150 to the customer, $300 total.
Assuming we have easy direct line of sight between buildings, just throw a cable from the router to an external point - 1 hour.
Cable on external to internal location on remote building - 1/2 hour because we cable to a location that suits us and not dictated by a 'source'.
Then another 1/2 hour for setting up the radios - being VERY generous.
Parts are 1 length of conduit, handful of saddles and maybe 30m of Cat 6 outdoor cable + PDL rj45 modules. So... $105 for parts, $180 for labour.
Job total $585 excl GST.

I reckon that's a decent amount to save for a SOHO business.

I certainly don't disagree with you @chevrolux that wireless is usually the cheaper option. But when you are faced with a more difficult wireless install, the VDSL option if cable is easy accessible is often much closer in price. Also as the price gap closes, and considering VDSL option is more robust, then paying a little premium I think is worth it.
If you quoted the above prices to me for install options, I'd personally opt for the more expensive VDSL.

There is of course no one single right way to do this type of link up, and hopefully this thread has given the OP a range of options and opinions to consider.

Edit: just checked VDSL Ethernet extender pricing, and they are actually much closer to $200 +GST retail now, so price gap has definitely closed up a bit more now.

Yea, I was surprised when I checked my wholesale pricing. I think it's close to half of what it was when I first installed these. Certainly puts it much more on par with wireless cost. Catch is, I find it's still a much smaller portion of sites that you can use these, due to cable between house & shed [or other] is not that common.

I used a couple of these for a school VoIP install. The VoIP was off a separate isolated LAN port, but there was a fibre network link between two buildings. I connected these across the old analog PABX wiring to the other building for the VoIP phones there.

When you say they would like internet in their second premises do you mean they want to share the existing connection or have a second new connection?

If sharing the existing connection why not install an overhead CAT6 link between both buidlings.

If they want a new connection provided the cable between the buildings is in good nick it would simply require a visit from the Chorus tech to get them up and running.

Just to reiterate.
The property has a main house and an outbuilding with existing phone lines. The owners have a phone connection in both buildings under one number.
They like to have a separate number in the main house and internet to the outbuilding.
I have been told(by SnapperNet) that a set of VDS-0200 would make this possible and that the phone on the land-line in the outbuilding would work even in a power cut situation. The owners could then choose a VOIP for the main building.
Nothing has happened on the ground as they are holidaying right now.
