DarthKermit: These PDL 8/16/24 gang plates are a nice idea but the cost of them and their flush boxes are utterly ridiculous. I'd use some if they weren't such a ripoff.

They are absurd.

I have used the clipsal 2000 series with the multigang box in the garage, but the box was a huge cost. Tried to do it with C clips in the loft at the right spacing to get the multiple cover plate to fit and then found that they dont do them anymore. Fffffffff. Plus they look like the deta stuff from bunnings so everyone will assume that's what you bought. Not a fan of the PDL plates - since I dont have their lightswitches or power sockets they dont match and the large modules look a bit silly.

These are the boxes I got - http://www.clipsal.com/Trade/Products/ProductDetail?catno=2157/4SB1 - russells said no when I wanted more of them, cover plate is this http://www.clipsal.com/Trade/Products/ProductDetail?catno=2000/4 - the box is really sturdy but a prick to get into an existing wall because of the length of it.

Looks ideal behind a TV, but behind the HT amp etc it would span shelves which would be a right PITA. Might get one when I do the games room wall instead of just a bunch of blank plates with holes in the side for the kinect and other TV top rubbish.

jonb: Here is my shopping cart from researching myself last night. Will also get another quad port faceplate and some patch cables. Will probably buy the Cat6 keystone jacks from trademe in packs of 5. Dynamix Cat6 cable was only $10 extra.

That grey punchdown tool is the krone type; its too clumsy for normal Cat.6 jacks so you may need the 110 punchdown tool or just trim the wires off after using that little yellow one.

afe66: There isnt anything different between cat5 and cat6 crimpers ?

The crimper tool is same, just cat.6 plugs are different and more fiddly but exactly same external size and interchangeable with any 8p RJ45 outlet. I have a few keystone jacks if you want some good used ones.

Time to find a new industry!

There can be a difference in the part of the crimper that pushes down on the retainer on the cable, not sure if that is a 5 vs 6 difference or a crap vs good crimper difference, but I have found that some will not properly push the bar down to hold the jacket in place all the time and that needs an additional hard squeeze to get it down, which may be over crimping the pins.

Of course all plugs and crimpers will vary slightly so you may not have that issue at all.

PDL 600 face plates and data jacks.

Dlink 8 port gigabit switch.

Dynamix 24 port patch panel.

(vodafone router on next shelf up for wifi coverage, right next to ONT, synology NAS is sitting below just off edge on picture)

The cabinet is one of the dynamix 28" cabinets and its fitted into built in wardrobe/cupboards.- luckily the back wall had an old power point which I moved a foot or so the left.

Here's another picture.

The ONT and the vodafone router sit on the next shelf up and you can see the synology NAS on the floor of the cupboard. I made sure the cabinet was high enough that the door could swing open over the top of the NAS. All the cat 6 cable runs down under the house then up into the wall of the lounge and terminates into a 6 port face plate being the AMP cabinet for AMP, HTPC, Sky, Bluray. Next long weekend might put more runs in but started small so I could a useful set amount done.

Switch and multiboard are fixed to the cabinet using adhesive Velcro.

This is what all home installs should look like, with the addition of any phone patching and the ONT installed inside (you'd have to have the cabinet installed prior to Chorus installing the ONT)

... oh, and that flush box cabinet actually installed flush on a wall :)
