Just an update on this. The Grandstream AP arrived, I ordered a power adapter, plugged it all in and immediately saw an increase of 200mbps up and down over the HG659b. We've seen as high as 675mbps down and 450 up over WiFi in the same room.

In the far reaches of our house, we now have more reliable coverage and I saw 250 down / 150 up when I tested it.

Really impressive results so thanks everyone for all of your help, especially michaelmurfy with the Grandstream recommend.

You can start to plan to have one AP for each room you like to have that speed since it most propably will NOT work through the walls. ;-)

Until then we should go with the GWM7610 ... (just ordered).

Michael, to feed something back for your valuable hints: I'll install a free hotspot for the poor guys (no drunken homelesses) resting in the parc nearby to gather free WiFi from a Telekom hotspot during business hours. They now should come within announced range clearance and with success they'll have it 24h/7d.

And I'll still wait for 'Wings over Wanaka' ... someday.

@Tinkerisk I have got a wireless AP I am testing now that gets over Gigabit on wireless (even through a few walls) but I'm also talking consumer grade stuff. The AP I have got has not been released and is looking to retail for $700NZD so out of reach of most people. The GWN7610 is possibly the best AP I've found with a decent price combined with decent performance and even kicks the crap out of a more expensive UniFi AC-Pro I've got.

That's why I ordered it and because I trust you even when you are out of reach for any after sale claims. To be honest, I've some kind of technical background which makes it easy to understand your approach to reach the best performance.

I fully agree (with ductworks even better), but it's a hard time to get them connected to mobiles or tablets or ... Let's hope that industrial design won't eat the network jacks as well which will be even bulkier and stiffer due to higher shielding efforts. When frequency rises higher we go more into direction of tubes and pipes instead of cables.

We have just about finished our renovation and Chorus are FINALLY coming Monday for the initial "see where we can put your box in the most inconvenient place possible for you" discussion. As we have added another level and I have pre-wired the house with ethernet cabling I have to make some decisions on hardware.

So from my reading all the advice given (and gratefully received I might add) I am thinking of the Grandstream GWN7000 to plug into the ONT box (which I will get out in at the top of the stairs roughly in the middle of the house) and a Grandstream GWN7610 to provide wireless for upstairs. Do you think it would be overkill to get another GWN 7610 to give wireless to the bottom level of the house (approx 220m2)? Should I place it at the other end of the house furthest from the stairs to give max coverage?

Also I had a question about cabling? What would be your recommendations on cables (Cat5/Cat6? something else?) to connect the router to ONT and Wireless AP's? Also can I use any old network switch on the cables wired into the house? Or is there something better than others? (e.g. where I have the kids XBox, Apple TV and my HTPC server which I would rather have wired than wireless).

Use cat 6.

dont be afraid to have extra access points, we have 2 in out 120sqm house, about 10m/3-4 walls apart. i would put one upstairs near one end and the other downstairs near the other. the signal does go down/up as well.

network switch, use a GbE one, or better still find one that supports PoE to power the access points with out the need for an injector, can get an 8/16 point one with 4/8 PoE ports.

1) Cat6
2) Grab 2 AP's - they'll adjust power anyway but it'll mean more stable WiFi.
3) Just an el-cheapo gigabit network switch from PB-Tech will do you fine. Just remember to buy PoE injectors when you buy the AP's. You could go with a PoE switch but I wouldn't bother for 2 AP's.

Also just a tip too - ensure you update the "Update URL" to firmware.grandstream.com in the routers configuration when you get it else you'll be wondering why it won't firmware upgrade the router or access points when you get it :)

GWN7610 arrived today and installed. Great device up and running but still figuring out the configuration specialities for my use cases. No flaws found so far. :-)

@michaelmurfy Between the GWN7000 and Edgerouter Lite, are they vastly different? AP = GWN7610. My mothers fritz died so she wants mine...thought I'd replace it with something decent this time.

It'll only be connected to 1 x 24 port gigabit switch, 1 x 8port POE switch with security cams/AP's attached and am on gigabit fibre.

Can get the Edgerouter Lite off a mate for $100ish secondhand or it would be $185 for the Grandstream but happy to spend if it's a better device. I'm just worried with only 3 ports on the Edgerouter if I want to add more switches in the future.

@Huskie If you're getting the GWN7610 then go for the GWN7000 router as the router's integrated wireless controller is very good. You can also daisy chain switches so having less ports on a router isn't normally an issue.

Also means less management - the edgerouter is an excellent router (it is what I personally use) but I could easily replace it with the GWN7000 and not lose anything.

Ah yes that's true. In that case, I will pick up the GWN7000 as the difference isn't much. Thanks!
