Just a couple of points. Firstly if the University router is detecting the client then shouldn't the first attempt from the home router be successful and then that particular characteristic stored? This is unless the characteristic did not recognise as a reasonable client?

2nd point guess could try another router but I don't want him to spend 30 dollars to find it doesn't work. This is especially given using Windows Internet sharing does work and if the previous posts on disabling quality-of-service works then there's a working solution anyway.

The best solution is if the University deploys WiFi throughout the hostel.

Well my friend's son has told me has fixed but didn't provide specific details. He's using one ethernet connection for his PC and one for the router. I am sure we tried all kinds of combinations but as I said, it's hard to remote diagnose these things. He did tell me he thought it be the wrong DNS server on the router WAN connection. When the router was connected we could ping the gateway but not go any further which sounds like a DNS issue.

 

Crossing our fingers to hope this stays fixed.
