I have the exact same problem as you - no COM4 in Phone Monitor. To help in diagnosing the problem, I have a few observations:
1. When I originally installed the SonyEricsson Communications Suite and all, the Phone Monitor did indeed see COM4.
2. I then tried absolutely everything I could to see if I could get things working - including changing various settings and following various bits of advice and tutorials that I found around the place (including this website, Club VAIO, SonyEricsson support and http://clubsonyericsson.com/en/ (currently down)
3. Perhaps importantly, I tried various versions of the Communications Suite - sometimes with a clean install in between, sometimes not. In particular, I tried some of the different packages that were available for download at http://clubsonyericsson.com/en/.
4. Around when I was giving up, I noticed that COM4 no longer was detected by Phone Monitor - this was *before* installing the new Sony Z1 BT upgrade.
5. Today I installed the BT upgrade and I did as clean an install as I could of the SE Communications Suite (latest version). Still no COM4.
Any of this story familiar to you? If, like me, you did a certain amount of experimentation earlier, I imagine you did it on your laptop and not your girlfriend's - hence the difference. However - it may be difficult to find the root of the problem...
As an aside, the only other possibility that I could think was blocking my COM4 is my Palmtop USB connection (A Sony CLIE of course...) Otherwise I have nothing else connected to my laptop (except a USB mouse and a Sony docking station).
Anyway - will keep searching myself and hopefully we can find a solution.
Bingo. Thats the point. Of course I tried everything that was possible on MY laptop, not on my girlfriend. Actually I tried to de-install the bluetooth-device driver, virtual com-port, SE Communication Suite and Bluespace NE. Of course I re-installed everything in the proper order. Somewhen in between COM4 disappeared in phone monitor and was never seen again. Actually the update does a very good job (even if its installation program crashes in other languages than english) and updated everything beside the actual bluetooth driver and the SE Data Suite. Well, I havent found a solution yet and syncronized my phone on my girl-firends notebook.
There is defenitely NO other device blocking COM4 (proof: Floats Agent can easily access that port), I even CAN install a data-connection. Interesting point: When I tried to setup the data connection COM4 was lost in the phone monitor on my girl friends Z1 for a while too.
Perhaps you are onto something there with your girlfriend's laptop - you set up a data connection and lost COM4 for a while - what did you change to get COM4 back, and how do those settings compare to your laptop?
I'll keep looking for a solution. Unfortunately, my girlfriend does not need a laptop, so she doesn't have one I can use to sync...
I have just installed the patch and restarted my computer. After a reboot , a window appeared where I have to choose my language. After I did this the installation went fine until after installing the virtual com port.
I got an error message saying files are missing involving the bluespace software. e.g. problems occur when installing a new version of the software. Everytime I reboot or restart I am prompted with the same 'select langauage' screen. I have tried to uninstall the bluespace software but the same error message comes up.
Anyone have any ideas to get rid of the window?
ps. Although, I can now send files to and from the phone.
Does anyone found a good solution for this? I still have this problem, and the only thing i want to is sync the phone with outlook... I Can send files/pictures but i can't synchronise with outlook (and starting to get desperate... but there aren't any solutions here either :( )
I happened upon this forum after many hours spent on this problem. I tried all the suggestions but came up short, then I figured a solution:
The bluetooth device is automatically setup as a modem and assigned a COM port. go to the control panel - modems section and make a note of this. Make sure you have the latest and greatest SE Comm sw, Sony Bluetooth and Tools etc. and everything is installed and in place. Make a note of your Bluetooth Virtual Com port.
Now open the registry editor and do a search and replace of your Bluetooth modems com port e,g, 'COM4' with your Bluetooth Virtual COM port e.g. 'COM6', check the Sony phone monitor and make it now shows your virtual COM port in the list.
Fire up XTND and away you go!
(Usual disclaimer applies when editing registry. No guarentee that your bluetooth with work as a dial up modem)
