...but I can't see an option to do this on my router (Netcomm NF4V).

get a better router . . . one that supports 5ghz (as almost all do now)

My last few routers have been Netcomm and have served me flawlessly, so I'd prefer to stay with them - but which ones do 5GHz, and have reliable wifi? I did have my eye on an NF18ACV or a NL1901ACV, although my preference is probably for the latter as the mobile backup option looks useful.

I still believe let the router be the router and have a proper AP from
Unifi Ruckus or Aruba

No, I like the all-in-one setup, so I'd be looking at a router.

This one's served me absolutely fine since around 2014, but I guess things die eventually.

Edit: I just realised I have a Spark router I've never used (an HG630B) so I'll set that up and test it out.

I'm on 100/20 anyway, so that's not an issue :) trying it now, will check how the wifi goes and report back.

Looking okay so far, but I'll give it a proper test this afternoon. Otherwise I might try updating the firmware on the Netcomm.

yes, or even a Spark Smart Modem off of trademe.
People get them for free and then flick them off thinking what they already have is better  . . . when in fact the Spark Smart modem is one of the better consumer modem/routers around at the moment. As good as the Fritz 7490 with better wifi

I'm getting disconnections on my Android phone as well. So obviously not just limited to the one device anymore.

I've now changed to this: https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet/spark-smart-modem.html which I got during the lockdown, and will see how it goes.

are you sure it is a Spark Smart Modem?
Above you referenced a Spark / Huawei HG630B which is a different modem altogether
